Didn't BlackBerry confirm the PB was hitting EOL a little while back? I took this as they aren't working on updating the PlayBook OS anymore.

True, but they did deploy them to Enterprise, like to some police departments. Maybe they're obligated to provide security updates for those contracts? If so, why not update consumers too?

Are sure those departments are still using them? Dead batteries?

Yep, I still see the odd mention of PB being used in enterprise/workspace.

    in your Playbook browser.

Interesting exploit... even the BB10 browser is vulnerable apparently.

Curious to see if the playbook will get a security update.

Remember, it's just a security fix. Lol

Hardly news, but here's the response I got from support:

"Thank you for contacting BlackBerry Technical Support.

Further investigation into affected products is ongoing, and BlackBerry is working to determine the full impact of the issue and confirm the best approach for protecting customers.

Thank you and have a nice day."

    "Meh".

Possible workaround: create a BAR file from a browser that is 1) Gingerbread-friendly and 2) patched of the freak vulnerability, and sideload. I'll try this out with the latest Dolphin browser and report back.

Both the client (PB) and server have to be vulnerable. Just be careful which sites you visit... until BlackBerry come out with a security patch for this and the other exploits that have been discovered in the last 12 mths or so

Re: my proposed workaround, I haven't been able to find a browser that is patched against the freak vulernability and works sideloaded on the PB's Android runtime. Can't say I'm too surprised! I tried the latest versions of Dolphin, Maxthon, and I think Opera beta. No dice.

The latest version of Boat browser showed promise; it actually opens on the PB and works properly (albeit in portrait, I believe). However, it is not patched against Freak, sadly. I may try one or two more when time permits, but like a lot of things PB these days, probably a dead end.

    How to fix this problem:

    1) Understand that NO native browser on BBW is going to be immune because they all just call on the same version of WebKit on the device. Nothing on the Android side either. Also understand that BlackBerry has EOLed the PlayBook and is not going to revive it for a browser patch. We are on our own now.

    2) Find someone who has the skill (Not me unless you want to wait a few years while I keep working on my computer science degree) and who cares to compile a newer version of WebKit (And Qt with it) for PlayBook. See if you can get them to compile Qt components for it too, those old Nokia components actually look pretty nice on the PlayBook.

    3) Write a third party browser using that new version of WebKit instead of the built in version on the device. Preferably use those components I mentioned for the UI. Don't bother writing it in AIR since you've gone to this much effort so far, why ruin it with a slow interface?

    4) Sell this updated self-contained browser on BBW, or give it away for free.

Actually a self-contained updated browser would be a great thing on many levels. The trick is finding someone with the skill, spare time, and motivation.

They do not care, I always thought one day if they released just a run-time update to 4.xx - the playbook would come to life again, it would probably make the news if they did it surprisingly as in just let the update make its way around the web as surely some people still check - I don't but surely some do..

B: Give it to us as OPEN-SOURCE so somebody can tackle it...

It would be good publicity for them all around and not be to hard for them to just release the run-time, all we need. I don't even want BB10 as it may not perform well on the PB but a runtime update, WOW - everybody would be dusting off those old playbooks!

You're right, they do not care. Playbook is end of life. Hell BB10 maybe going end of life. No way they will revisit the Playbook. Let it go at this point.

Use it as it can be or sell it in the marketplace.
