After a long struggle with the sync issue with Google I have given up. It's been working intermittently for months now but last night at 8.23pm my pb would not allow me to enter next week's meeting in the calendar. All this week's meetings are there but as soon as I open an event, the edit icon and delete item disappeared. Change default calendar from Google to local and works perfectly. Deleted google calendar and attempt to reinstall only to get error message.

Thinking google were experiencing difficulties I left the issue until this morning. Tried again with the same error message. Enough is enough and at this point I'd had ENOUGH!

Due to the problems already experienced with Google calendar I have already tested outlook.com so quickly dropped a calendar and contacts csv file from Google, (Web Site works perfectly and so does my Z10), imported them into outlook.com and hey presto the sync between pb, Z10 and pc was almost instant. All three are now working perfectly so all of my gmail accounts have been deleted.

Sorry just had to get that off my chest as I'm away from my pasties and brandy!

Yeah it's a shame... on my playbook Google calendar works just fine the only think it won't allow is attendee invites. When I got my z10 I heard of users with complaints about Google not working on it but I couldn't be happier.. I simply entered my email and password and contacts, email, and calendar all sync beautifully and instantaneously with attendee invite support etc. Full functionality. The z10 automatically configured email in Google push imap and contacts and calendar in cardav and caldav respectively.

Like you I had also created an outlook.com account before getting my z10 and I put all my contacts and calendar events in it which was pretty straight forward but of course I had to try Google on it first to see if it would work.. and I'm glad it's working. Of course though, the good news is that if Google does not work for others, like you, then outlook.com is an awesome alternative that is guaranteed to work with full functionality through active sync, even on the playbook which I've tested already.

Outlook.com seems to be the better fit with BlackBerry, especially the PlayBook and OS10 phones. I am also more comfortable using a free service provided by a company that makes money selling software, not one using your information to sell advertising.

I've been monitoring members talking about GMail and Outlook.com, and I can tell there are some real teething problems. And this is whether it is on a BOLD or on a BB10.

I'm on the fence. I have a Google Apps account, GMail account and an Outlook.com account. I want an account that will work on ALL smartphones, seamlessly. Why? I switch devices very often, and thus don't want to have some 'special' setup for each device.

Anyway, all that to say, I'm strongly considering testing Outlook.com when I get a BB10. But, then I have to ask myself if it will work okay on Android and iOS. See, decisions, decisions...

I have been using outlook to sync with the playbook as well. What I don't like with outlook is that when I delete an email on my phone it doesn't sync that with the web.

I've also had gmail + calendars + contacts in sync working fine on and off for over a year. The effort involved in finding a solution when it stops working is not worth the effort involved in having it. We all know that bb and Google don't exactly make a good team working together and the only thing that stopped me moving to outlook.com was Microsofts recent affiliation with Nokia, but it would appear though that Microsoft have resisted the urge to involve themselves in company politics and will give any manufacturer access to their products. Some free, some chargeable but that is probably why more people use Microsoft products than google product's!

There are only a few simple rules.

Effort required = minimum, result achieved = suits the purpose, action required = use it.

Effort required = constant attention, result = end user frustration, action required = source a workable alternative.

Personally I haven't had any problems with Google on my Bold, Curve, PlayBook, in the past year. On my short time with Z10 I also haven't had any issues but that's just me. I've also never "Manually" set up accounts either.. when setting up an account on playbook or z10 I just click add email.. enter password and that's it. I don't go advanced I just let the device do the settings for me and I've never had any problems that way. Google no longer uses active sync? No problem.. my z10 automatically configured it on push Imap and caldav and cardav. Zero issues but again, that's just me across my devices for the past year..

I'm not saying people don't have issues, but I'm curious to know exactly what causes these issues for these users.

Wouldn't I like to know as well. However I realised that I have no allegiance to Google, I don't own any google shares so why should I continue to struggle with Google issues. I have enough on my plate struggling with BB issues without taking on someone else's.

Yeah definitely.. I've had no reason to switch but tested an outlook.com account prior to z10 due to the issues I've heard about and would have gone outlook if Google didn't work as outlook seems to have been working really well on the playbook and it uses active sync which is nice. The only hassle in switching is that with time many things are associated with Gmail and people are aware to contact you there but other than that, outlook is does the job and I'm using it as my secondary email now.

I agree outlook.com works great with the pb only wish I could get it to sync with my old bb torch, which suits me fine in every other way.

Yeah true Hotmail/ outlook are not very good with bbos in my opinion.. it does email sync but lacks contacts and calendar support unlike Google for those looking for these kinds cloud based PIM services. On active sync though it's fully functional.

I have cut out using gmail, I have switched my PIM over to Outlook.com and am very happy with it so far. Email, calendar, contacts all working great. My only problem is lack of support on older BB phones. BB10 works great as well as the Playbook.

Any even better solution.... Get a hosted exchange email. We have done that for business and it works great with the BB10 and the playbook. OTO sync between all device's and desktop Outlook. Cost is about $10/m with a hosting company or direct through MS for $4.10/m

If you're talking about on the Z10 or playbook then yes, it will automatically sync your contacts and appointments wherever you make the change (on device /pc/whatever. However, I can't guarantee anything about the 25000 contacts lol. I have around 200 and everything worked fine when I had tried it out and many other users report a similar experience with outlook.com

    I'm quoting myself...

I forgot to add, outlook.com works like a charm sync wise etc etc

BUT... the desktop browser version of the calendar of outlook is horrendous (they have not updated the interface yet ), think its been almost a year or 2 now and no word on this yet, Microsoft are very very slow and their outlook layout is not consistent, still works etc but its really unprofessional if you ask me.

Before you do anything, just set up a new outlook.com account. Drop yourself a contacts csv file from either google contacts or wherever you have them stored. Imported the file into the outlook.com account contacts file.

If outlook.com accepts the 25,000 contact csv import without error then you are off and running. Check the results in the outlook.com account contacts program and if your happy set up the account on your Z10 and your pb. Sync will happen automatically and from then on make additions, deletions or amendments on either device and the results sync with the other device.

It's can be a little traumatic changing suppliers mid stream when everything is set up and running fine, but I tend to like peace of mind and not to be at the end of some whimsical tantrum every time they change their mind. Even though it is a Microsoft product I have never fancied having a xxxxxxx@hotmail.com address. I understand the logic behind the choice of name due to so many companies supplying snail mail accounts at the time. Maybe it's just me but it always makes me thing of someone invoked in the pornography industry. (yes I know I'm sad).

Now they have changed to outlook.com I was willing to give it a trial period of testing and it's perfect for my uses but I still resisted the change in true human tradition of course. This last issue with Google has just tipped the scales though. Being old I like the old sayings best and if you analyze them they fit the purpose. 'It was the last straw that broke the camels back'.

I'll stay with Microsoft for now who don't seem to dislike bb as much as Google do!
