Download a file manager from BlackBerry World. There are various options. Take the trial version of Files & Folders for a spin to see if you like it:
Probably the best app for moving/arranging many files on your PB is Ghost Commander, a dual panel file manager, which is free in app world.
+1 to that, another happy user of ghost commander.
I have both of these file manager apps and they are both superb. Files and folders tends to get a little confused if you transfer and rearrange a lot of files. It just needs closing down and reopening to clear it.
Definitely ghost commander is the best app for file management on the playbook, it is an android port but it works as fast as a native app and is very customizable. A few benefits of ghost commander:
attach any file to the native email app
share your files to other android apps on your playbook
change the background colors and the text.
toolbar for faster management
zip and unzip files
copy and paste files faster than with files & folders.
access to your shared windows folders.
and much more......
There is not much you can do with the native File Manager, so I'd simply recommend a new file manager.
- Files and folders (paid)
Great for organization, and a major plus is that it works with Dropbox, Skydrive, Google Drive and more.
BlackBerry World - Files and Folders for PlayBook
- Ghost Commander (free)
I'd say it isn't that great for organization... but it helps you be organized. The two columns does a lot more than you could imagine. The UI is a bit cluttered though, in my opinion.
BlackBerry World - Ghost Commander file manager
Edit; Clarity and Information.
File and folders looks to have a lot of features tailored towards the PlayBook.
The two aspects I find very good about Ghost Commander - and ftp client and smb client built in. So if you want to kinda do the reverse of WiFi file sharing from your PC / file sharing stack - then either ftp or smb map away. Also having the smb client means you can easily map to another PlayBook too.
Since the Subject is the rather broad "File Manager" maybe it would not be inappropriate to ask you for some info in this thread. It appears that you have a way of "seeing" or "getting" to the computer from the pb using either the ftp or smb client in Ghost Commander. Would it be too difficult or time-consuming to ask for more details on how to accomplish this? Or is this a major lesson in Networking?
edited to fix my backwards reference! Yes, Pacoman and Wongsky, I typed what I did NOT mean initially.
I think that he is not talking about getting to the PB from a computer using Ghost, as is done with our typical wifi sharing where we access our PB from our computer. Rather, he is talking abour the reverse of this, where Ghost can access ones PC using its "Windows Share" function. Windows share allows Ghost to access shared folders on your PC. So, if you're sitting outside on your patio with your PB, sipping on a pina colada, and you want to grab a file off of your PC which is running indoors, you can do this with Ghost without having to leave the patio. You can also use Ghost this way to stream media that is stored on your PC. There are native apps that will allow you to do this, but they all require that a dedicated server be running on your PC. Ghost requires no dedicated server.
As to gabrielingimars claim that Ghost's UI is cluttered, if ones plays with Ghosts settings, it allows for a good deal of tweaking of the UI to make it more user friendly. So you can change font size, pic thumbnail size, and tweak the toolbar, etc,. to suit ones needs/likes.
Well if I want to go PC -> PlayBook over WiFi we probably all understand how to do WiFi file sharing with the PlayBook - at the PC end, for Windows, Windows networking client needs enabling, then you can just either map a network drive, or simply open the UNC path (ie \\<playbook IP address>\media) using Windows explorer.
If you want to do the reverse, you'd need to enable Windows file sharing on your PC, and within Ghost Commander, have it connect to a Windows share. And that's also what you'd do if you wanted to use Ghost Commander to connect to another playbook - connect as a Windows share use the 2nd playbook IP address as server, path either leave as / or perhaps more suitably /media, leave domain blank, and use the WiFi sharing user and password from the 2nd playbook.
If you're using Unix derivatives (eg Linux, Mac) then you'd need to have Samba shares available on them, for Ghost Commander to be able to connect to them as Windows shares.
Personally I don't enable Windows file sharing on my Windows PCs at home. I have got one or two running filezilla ftp server, though, and construct each ftp site to share any media I want to other ftp clients on my home network. I can build that virtual ftp site to include several local drives or media folders on the PCs, then if I'm upstairs, I can use Ghost Commander to connect to my PCs using ftp, and copy files like that.
Thanks, both. Yup, I typed the reverse of what I intended and wanted. Gain the computer from the pb while sipping, well, maybe a Campari and tonic water - after all, we rarely reach 70F in the summer here and that is expected again today. Yesterday I annihilated myself on a stiff hike and today, relaxing in the sun might be the ticket.
Thanks.
So whichever you find easier between setting up Windows file sharing (I'm assuming your computer is running Windows) on your computer - if it's not Windows, it can still be done on Linux or Mac using Samba (has Mac made that native?).
Or, setup an ftp server - filezilla server is ffreeware and open source on, um, opensource, it's pretty easy to setup, and you can interleave various drive and / or folders into your virtual ftp server.
Truth be told, I didn't do this explicitly for using my PlayBook, I setup an ftp server a while back when I first started using an Android tablet - 'cos ES File explorer also includes an ftp client.
thanks all, just downloading ghost commander...

Ghost commander has a little learning curve but you can make the UI look as cool as this:
