The problem could have been caused by a poor WIFI signal.
With a poor WIFI signal the device puts more power to the radio and reduces battery life. Where I live one of my rooms has really poor WIFI, when I leave my PlayBook there, even on standby my battery drains noticeably. When I leave it anywhere else and it stays charged for days.
I have never noticed any reports for a fault like this which would indicate either mechanical damage or ruptured cells. Cell rupture is very uncommon in OEM batteries (but more likely in counterfeits) and multiple instances would almost certainly provoke a Dell-style recall. Can you provide any links or even a general pointer to the reports?
The standard (yellow plug) charger is adequate, although rather slow when the PB is also being used while charging. Fast charge (high current) generates more heat and is usually considered less friendly to batteries - but this is unlikely to be an issue with any of the RIM supplied charging supply particularly if the device is in active use, with the charger output shared between operating the screen/processor AND charging the battery. The big danger which could cause ruptured cells is gross overcharging, which should be impossible with internal circuits controlling the charge level.By all means, find a way to acquire the fast charger - either in dock form of standard cable form - and only use it to charge your PB with. I believe the packed-in standard charger isn't doing the PB battery any good. The fast charger puts out much more amperage and will treat the PB battery much better.
One possible cause nobody seems to have mentioned could be a conflict in the web site you were "following". If for whatever reason it causes a continuous refresh cycle the tablet WiFi will produce a continuous drain on the battery. If that is the case it would need further study to determine whether this is a conflict with the PB browser, a bug, or bad coding on the website.
OP that totally sux and was a sorry representation of PlayBook.
1.5 hour ? maybe your playbook was not fully charged. I can multitask on my playbook for several hours.
Sent from Blackberry Playbook using TapaTalk 2
you probably didn't use PB as intensive as OP, there is no way you use PB continuously for almost 16 hours
I doubt he was using it continuously. That sounds reasonable with plenty standby time, though.
I'm not going to spend time trying to search for odd terms, but for what it's worth, I recall at least 3 or 4 threads that dealt with what appeared to be a battery leak on a PlayBook. And I've done quite a bit of reading around here.
And IIRC from Peter, the Battery Guru dev, both the standard and the rapid charger have the same max charging capacity at standby. The difference is the Rapid Charger has the ability to maintain that max rate while being used.
I've been able to hit draws in the 5+V range, but it was in direct sun, making the backlight fully lit and I was bridged and pulling from the web, had Messages open and also texting my wife over Bridge, playing Angry Birds and had the camera open to take pics. We were at a soccer game.
Is your battery that is faulty, not the Playbook itself, if that was the actual performance......well, the company would be out of business.
piman02, You didn't mention what your starting charge level was, nor did you describe what level you thought it had reached and why you decided to stop. That makes it kind of hard to tell what actually happened.
Assuming you had it even close to fully charged, there are a few possibilities. One is a hardware defect as others have suggested. I wouldn't even start with that assumption though... Occam's Razor suggests a few more likely candidates.
What if the battery level indicator was simply wrong? Maybe you didn't have the charge you thought you had at the start. When had you last charged it, and was it definitely fully charged (where it stops charging)?
Maybe it didn't have the charge you that at the end. Did you just stop because it said "5%" or something, or did it actually shut itself down (which it does when the voltage gets too low)?
If it was close to fully charged, and truly reached an empty or very near-empty state, then over 1.5 hours you were averaging about 12W of power consumption. Not only is this not really possible, but if we ignore that wee fact, your PlayBook would have been burning up. As in, so hot you probably couldn't have held it without some pain. You would definitely have noticed the problem, and the smoke alarms likely would have as well...
But without extra data, nobody can give you an definite answer... I doubt your hardware is bad though. Have you run a "drain test"? (Search the forum... it's a very old post of mine.) It would tell you just what your battery capacity really is, and may give the % level calibration a kick in the seat of the pants too, in case it's been thrown off.
