Chances are you might have to send in your PlayBook for repairs. This is a known hardware issue.

Well I suppose unofficially it is. This is what the BlackBerry reps told many of us here on CrackBerry who have had this issue. The OP will more than likely have to send in his/her device.

What are some ways in rebooting except for the volumes up and down?

To fix an issue, try these in order:

Restart using the Battery Icon and press Restart

Press and hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds. Then leave it for 20-30 seconds and see if it restarts.

To REBOOT:
Press and HOLD all three keys for about 10 - 20 seconds: PowerOn, VolUp and VolDown. Start with the PowerButton. Keep holding past the 3-choice options screen. If you hear a shutter type sound, you've taken a Screen Shot and probably missed the PowerButton.

Generally, these will NOT fix the camera issue but clearly you can try them. Good luck

Sounds interesting. Where does one acquire a camera assembly for those that might be interested.

I wonder if rim replaces it, too, or if there's some "software/firmware" non-physical method of repair.

My camera hasn't been working for a while now. Seeing as I picked up my PlayBook at release I doubt that they will cover anything wrong with it. Since everything else seems to be working just fine so I am not even worrying about it. I rarely use the camera anyway.

They have been known to fix the camera BUG even after the warranty would be over. But no promise

The PB has a one year warranty to the original purchaser. It also has 90 free Tech support. I do not know how Rim deals with "quasi-tech support v. warranty"

4003 Error FIXED
Like may on this thread, I had this happen. I tried many restarts with no joy. However, I found that the front camera worked fine with "video call". I was even able to get it to take a picture occasionally by switching to 'camera' .
"Hard reboot " fixed the problem for me.
How:. PB is on. Hold down power button (as usual to turn off) and at same time press both volume up and volume down buttons and HOLD ALL for maybe 60 second. PB turns off. Then restart in same way.
This is equivalent to removing battery on cell phone.
Clearly, this error is a software issue, at least in some PB tablets.
Hope this helps someone.!!

Like I said in your duplicate post, it's very rare for a hard reset to fix 4003. If it was, BB would not RMA so many. I recall only one other case.

FIXED UPDATE.....FIXED!!!! You will love it!!!
OKAY, so hard reboot only worked once or twice. I have tried security wipe, uninstall OS, and then reinstall OS (losing all apps, etc. - but backed up data). Still no joy.
THEN I found the answer by another poster on another forum. Read on; you may think this is stupid, but it worked!! (Note: I think I killed the camera originally by taking screen shots when a video was playing. That worked fine, but I will not do it again. The front camera worked subsequently, but only on video chat. This makes me believe these "error.4003 camera" are software issues)
WHAT TO DO. -. EXACTLY
1. Select battery icon and turn off the PB
2. Turn on and hold down the volume up and volume down bottoms (for 30+ sec. ?)
3. AFTER PB TURNS ON, PRESS BOTH VOLUME UP AND VOLUME DOWN BUTTONS.
(As take a screen shot. You should hear the shutter sound.)
4. THEN - Press the camera icon, and VIOLA! ALL IS RESTORED.!!

I know this sounds crazy. I am not a geek, but have tried all recommended fixes prior to this, and nothing worked. This did. Obviously a software error, that probably is fairly easily fixed with a patch, if some bright coder wanted to do so before BlackBerry totally tanks.
I love this device, and use it as my primary since a laptop died 6 months ago. Purchased in Ontario August 2012.
PlayBook 16 G OS 2.1.0.1753. Downloaded 2 October 2013. Los Angeles.

Best of luck today to all readers!

WHERE did you get the repairs done?

I am sorely disappointed to have spent four hours or more of my time reloading the O/S for my Playbook and then 2 hours on the phone with courteous and helpful people trying to remedy an Error.4003.picture error.

Throughout my time talking to BlackBerry Playbook support I was continually lead to believe that a "RMA would be readily forth coming" and "It would be no problem to get my PlayBook Repaired."
It was not until hour six the RMA person informed me that the hardware failure, a known and pervasive defect fault in the Playbook would not be covered.

A. I would have liked to have been told the repair would not be covered at the very beginning instead of wasting two hours, much of which I was on hold listening to very obnoxious low fidelity music.

B . When told that my Playbook would not be covered, I was told to find a local repair shop to get the failed camera module repaired. The closest on to my area I could find was in the U.K. Why is there no list of repair centers available to tell customers where to take them?

C. This is my biggest complaint: The web is fraught with camera module failures that happened after the last O/S download. The error indicates theta the camera is in use by another application. That does not sound like a mechanical failure, rather a software failure.

D. and if this is a pervasive failure, cannot Black Berry make discounted repair option available for out of warranty fixes when there is a known factory faulty module?

try to escalate to a supervisor. I had mine repaired 20 months after purchase, they paid shipping and all.
this was last month. maybe the rep didn't like you and decided to say no just out of mischief.
