Email (POP3/SMTP) and 2.1.0.1032 Playbook O/S
Hi,
Love my Playbooks. Just bought a second one ($148 at Staples in north Waterloo). But I've had a funny problem. I use an old fashioned, generic email account, via POP3 and SMTP.
This is old, non-encrypted email, and exists on service I've used since the 1990's.
I have it configured on a variety of machines - Windows via Thunderbird, Linux with the Fedora default email, an iPad, and two Playbooks. But since the OS 2.1.0.1032, I noticed
a funny problem. I had a friend send me two emails with large attachments. Each attachment was a .pdf, 11 meg and 7 meg respectively.
I have a very low bandwidth connection (old style dialup) at my rural farm location. (Bell ended its Wi-Max service, and left me stranded with worthless Wi-max hardware.. Grrrr.)
But dialup works ok, and I can find lots of high-speed wi-fi sites in town. But when I tried to download/sync my Playbook email - it worked fine, except when I try to open the email
messages that have the large .pdfs. All the email messages are indicated, and (since I am at a Starbucks, with fast WiFi), I know bandwidth is not a problem. PLus, I used a
fast Windows XP laptop running Firefox and Thunderbird to download and save the big email files in less than 30 seconds - no problem. But, the Playbook email, has a bug.
WHen I click on the email messages with the big .pdf's, it says "Downloading Message...", and *stays* that way. It does not exit. The "Downloading Message.." screen, with
the little rotating circle, just stays there. What is really funny, is that if you wait a few minutes, and then start tapping away on the screen (which still says "Downloading Message...."
and still has the little circle moving..), the big .pdf is in fact downloaded correctly. You will either flip into Adobe .pdf reader, or, if lucky, you can get the "Save" option, and save
the .pdf to your Playbook as a file (which is of course, what I wanted to do.).
But the "Downloading Message.." screen does not exit - ever. Exit email, and re-start by clicking the "Messages" icon, and it locks in "Downloading Message.." mode,
until it is exited, despite having successfully done this.
Again, I am on a fast network link at Starbucks, and all the rest of all my other email messages display fine.
If anyone has any idea how I can work around this bug, or resolve it, please post a suggestion. If I determine how to resolve this,
I will post the solution as a follow up post here. Seven megabytes is really not that large an attachment, and should not pooch the "Messages" app, eh? :D
Thanx.
