We have an Apple Network router,
getting up there,but works well with both kidsApple laptops
It was always poor on my 8900, but constantly dropping Playbook
Anyone recommend a BB friendlier router to replace this with?

Might just be your settings. I find the pb doesnt do well with hidden ssid's.

my pb is actually faster and better on wifi - compared to my ipad1.

I have the Apple Airport Extreme router running 7.5.2 and it works fine.

Try updating the driver for your router.
I have the Apple router and works fine with my PB.
Here are instructions for updating the driver on your Apple router...
Go into Finder, click Applications > Utilities > Airport Utility
Double click on the router, then hit "update".
Done

I've had my AirPort for about 4 years now. One thing I noticed is that it runs really hot and gets buggy if you don't keep it well ventilated. I have mine sitting on 4 little blocks (dice) so that air can get under it.
