I noticed my PB was "clutching" or "hitching" (for lack of a better word) when recording video last Friday. Then, I noticed simillar results when my son was playing a couple of games on Sunday.

I checked the Free Storage and I only had 300 MB free.

First I restarted, but, the results persisted. So, I pulled several vidoes off the device to my PC - and deleted some unwanted apps. Now I have 1.7 GB free and it seems to be running smooth again.

Is it possible that I was just pushing the memory too far - or, did one of my random app removals improve it?

RTOS partitions RAM with seperate kernel per task. Depending upon your Application Behavior in the General settings determines how apps behave when not in front and how much virtual space required per running app...at least that's my understanding. In any system that uses virtual memory it is good to leave 10% to 25% disc storage free.
