I posted this in another thread last night, but due to the frequency of posts I see pertaining to problems with the PB being recognized by DM and mixed suggestions, I'm posting this separately.

We probably need to be very specific in the status of the PB and computer and steps taken. I've been wanting to experiment with this since I've had recognition issues also.

My issue was that when I would connect, my computer nor DM would recognize the PB unless I jostled or moved the usb connection. What I found had nothing to do with my moving the usb plug.

Here are the methods I tried and the status of my hardware. Result summary at bottom.

    - PB, May build, 64g, latest official update.
    - Laptop, Dell XPS running updated Vista

    1st method

    1- Laptop up and running
    2- PB on, wifi on
3- Opened up DM and checked for latest update
4- Connected PB using my 9930 OEM USB cable and waited
5- 2min later PB was recognized
6- Performed backup, wifi still on
7- Shut down DM and disconnected PB

    2nd method

    1-Same as above
    2- PB on, wifi on
    3-DM opened and running
4- Connected PB with PB OEM USB cable
    5-Immediate recognition
    6- Skipped backup
    7- Same

    3rd method

    1-Same
    2- PB on, wifi off
    3- DM opened and running
4- PB connected using 9930 OEM USB cable, waited
    5- 2.5min before recognition
    6- BU skipped
    7- Same

    4th method

    1-Same
    2- PB on, wifi off
    3- DM opened
4- Connected PB using PB OEM USB cable
    5- Immediate recognition
    6- BU skipped
    7- DM closed, PB disconnected

    5th Method

    1-Same as all above
    2- PB on, wifi on
    3- DM off
4- Connected using 9930 OEM USB cable, waited
5- 2+ min before recognized as drive Z, Device Manager icon pops up in tool bar
6- Opened DM, immediate recognize and connection
7- BU skipped, DM closed, PB disconnected

    Method 6

    1-Same as all above
    2- PB on, wifi on
    3- DM off
4- Connected using PB OEM USB cable
5- Immediate recognition as drive Z, Device Manager icon pops up in tool bar
6- Opened DM, PB recognized and connected, no delay
7- BU skipped, DM closed, PB disconnected

Two more methods were performed same as the latter two except wifi off, same results respectively.

The summary with my set up was:

1- No difference if wifi was on or off with my recognition speeds
2- No difference if DM was opened and running or not to computer or DM recognition
    speeds
3- The only difference I noted was longer recognition when using my 9930 usb cable.

I don't know the difference in the two cables, but both are BB OEM and the phone cable
is larger diameter. 1 to 2 minutes is long enough for most people to think recognition is not taking place.

This only applies to my computer and equipment. Results with different computers and settings may differ.

Sorry for the long post, and I know this seems obsessive, but I was curious and if it helps anyone, then it was worth it

Uninstall the DM and all it's saved settings. Then reinstall after pc reboots. This fixed my issues.

Thanks, but I do that everytime I update DM. I've really no problems now. The problem I had turned out to be a delayed PB recognition when using my 9930 usb cable. No problems with the PB cable. My issue could have been computer related also, don't know.

I also have a Dell XPS running XP of all things... this is my workhorse from h3ll. I love it!
    I also have a Dell M170 running Win7..
    Still like the XPS Better!

But I have no issue with the DM on my XPS. Win7 is a different story and gave up.

Lol, Good for you jafobabe! Vista is ok, once I increased my memory, But XP still rules!!! I built a dedicated music server and it runs best on XP also. I have been beating off everyone at work who are trying to get me to update my workstation from XP lol. Works for me
