I have .668 and it locks the screen. You have to put a finger in the bezel scrolling area. Not too close to the edge but not on the screen either.

....For those of you calling it useless and annoying, well I hope someday you get a persistent smudge/piece of dirt on your screen and have to remove it
Oh magic! Just what I needed. Sorry to hear I may lose it next update.

I learned a lot from this thread. When trying some of the things out I came across something that must have been mentioned somewhere before but I'll just add it to the findings/found.

I don't have the orientation lock on. So, if I am sitting and want to quickly show something to someone who's on the couch and lying on their side the screen might go into portrait. Or they would have to change their position to see it easily. Well, the Playbook has a gesture to temporarily freeze the orientation in addition to freezing the scrolling. Placing your thumb on either side's bevel and, while keeping contact, slide it onto the screen. The current orientation remains locked until you release your thumb. It's then possible to show someone something easily.

Note: I have Version .668. Don't know if this would make any difference.

It works on 2.1.840, but its not a gesture and has nothing to do with the bezel. Simply holding a finger on the screen anywhere will hold the orientation until you release your finger.

When I just place my thumb on the screen and turn the Playbook from landscape to portrait or vice versa the screen changes. Only if I start from the bezel and slide onto the screen will the orientation temporarily lock. Maybe the update is the difference?

Threads like this really show the tech level of the average Playbook user. Even the supposed support guys. Frightening.

Well, I'm running beta 2.1, so maybe there's a difference.

I figure most of us aren't tech specialists (and why should we have to be to use and appreciate a tablet?) so we're thankful for the things some nice folks are willing to share so we can learn. I don't find it frightening, I find it awesome that some people are willing to take the time to help so thanks fellow Crackberrians!

Exactly what I used it for was to flick something off the screen. But I just upgraded to 2.1 and the "lock" no longer works.

An extremely useful "bug" IMO. I guess it's the same with the triple tap to drop (and lock) a drop down menu, which is now almost impossible.

I never tested this on 2.0, and now it just does not work. Nothing locked if I press on bezel. I am on 2.10.1032

I never noticed this either but yes, it works exactly this way on .358. Thank you OP for pointing this out. As another poster said, it's perfect for getting a piece of "smooge" off the screen. If this feature wasn't "designed in" it should have been.
