I am sure we are all guessing, but will the 16 G version of PB continue to be supported with software upgrades, or do we believe the smaller memory size will prohibit it? Could this be the main reason it will no longer be manufactured?
As an aside, to date, the 16 G memory size has never limited my PB usage.
I have both 16g and 64g versions. Only different I can see is the storage so, I pretty confident that is updates will be the same on both and cannot see a reason why it would be restricted.
Right now I only have 18 percent of my 1 Gb memory remaining. It would seem easy for a new operating system to need more than 18 percent more memory.
If your device is nearly full you might have to move some stuff elsewhere while you upgrade.
Bear in mind that the 16GB Playbook is absolutely, functionally and technically identical to the 32s and 64s, only differing in sheer capacity. Any updates provided for them will work on yours too.
All Playbooks have 1 GB of system memory, which is operating RAM when the Playbook is running. The limiting factor for an OS upgrade would be the storage memory. If the next upgrade is 16 GB + 1 byte, then the 16 GB Playbooks are out; otherwise, it should work.

16+GB is really huge for a mobile OS, QNX isn't windows
You never know, maybe they'll surprise us and include everything under the sun with BB10 making it just much too large to fit in the 16GB version, hence the phasing out of it. However, more likely the overall size of BB10 will not take more than a few Gigs at most. No hard facts here, just guessing...

If the BlackBerry 10 operating system requires 16GB for storage then the developers ought to be tarred, feathered, and run out of Waterloo on the nearest railway track. How in Hades can you make such a preposterous statement in response to a legitimate question? The BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB/32GB/64GB will support BlackBerry 10. Do you seriously think the new BlackBerry 10 smartphones will have 16GB RAM and 16GB storage allocated just to the operating system?
Strangely, there are plenty of advertisements for BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB @ CAD199.99 in the weekly flyers. There must still be a sufficient inventory if retailers are advertising them.
RIM discontinued the 16gb for one reason alone... Profit margin on it is next to zero, and people are happy to spend $50 extra for double the memory, and $100 more for quadruple the memory. I would! They are still amazing values on the Playbook compared to competing major tables at that price range!!!
As far as QNX goes, and BB10, RIM is obviously intent on keeping it compact and efficient which is what made it so sleek and fast in the first place. And it will need to fit on phones. Like Linux can be made very small and run fast, QNX is designed to do the same thing. I highly doubt they would want to bloat it with garbage. It already takes a few minutes to boot up from a cold start. Also keep in mind what people said about system memory all being same, only the additional non-system storage changed between 16/32/64gb models.
Can't wait for BB10!
