I wished I could mirror your results, but I can't. I have the same results as you do with the media card encryption disabled.
When I enabled the media card encryption setting, I was able to open an email attachment that was stored (before I change the encryption setting) on the bridge. But I received the error "An internal error has occurred! (121045252)" and my only option was to choose "OK".
I then deleted the attachment file stored in the bridge folder from the Storm2. Then I attempted to open a BES email attachment and I received the same "An internal error has occurred! (121045252)" error again. I really want this feature to work. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. FWIW, I am using a Sandisk 8GB media card.
