Are you looking to access all the files on your laptop? it is possible to set up a webserver on your laptop and access/stream files and media however only files in a specific directory can be accessed.... is that what you are looking for?
tried putting smb:// and the ip address of it into the browser? If your network HDD has one of these web interfaces then that may work.
I would not mind a simple method that allowed access from the pb to my computer??? I like the ease of wifi sharing and grabbing stuff on my pb easily. The reverse would be nice (with some level of security)
What about your regular Windows file sharing? That uses smb. Is there any way for a Playbook to browse local smb shares?
bump, I would like to know this.
Smb/cifs access is not currently present, however setting up a web server is fairly easy and then you can access your files (for movies/audio you can stream them) from the browser.
A different way to do this, is to use free VNC client available from app world and setting up VNC on your laptop/desktop. Then you can VNC to laptop and essentially drop files in the \\playbook\ share.
IMT VNC works well.and is free. You just need to install tight vnc on the laptop and setup accordingly.
The main idea was to have a simple browse for all the files on the laptop (hdd ) with-out extra web servers on itch computer (hdd) I want to access . thanks for all your replys
I have never used VNC, does this allow to access the information any where or only when your connected to that network? I guess what I'm asking is, could i set it up on my work computer and access those files if from anywhere. Example, I'm in a meeting 2hours away from my desktop, and they happen to ask a question, the answer to that question is on my desktop could i just pull it from my Playbook?
I guess some of us need a detailed tutorial or setup procedure. So, if _YOU_ are not busy trying to burn down the "rental" maybe you can find time. (I should plan for the weekend's photo shoot - hiking today but it's only Thurs)
Yes, you can access your PC with VNC from any place if you have internet access. However, VNC is not a very secure protocol, even though you can setup a password. It is not recommended to open up VNC world wide access.
There is an alternate (paid) app RDM+ that might be more secure (I have never used it).
Once the NDK comes out, we will probably find a windows RDP client as well. This is nice, since there is no software to install on the machine (for windows only). This should not be opened up world wide (imo), however some people do leave it open. SSH for linux will be available soon after the NDK release as well.
Usually you will have several PCs behind one public IP, so you need to configure port forwarding on your router and make sure firewall is configured to allow the connection.
Yes, this is just a stop gap for people wanting to access shares and doesn't help when you only have access to a file share and not the server. I don't think support for this will come with OS 2.0, I am more looking forward to the NDK release, I am sure we'll see something eventually...
NDK is released, so does anyone have luck with this?
i use a hfs file server to upload and download docs from my home network drive. works a treat. check it out:
David Harvey 2.1 Server - Home/
I think it is still in beta.
Anyone tried entering //computername/windowsharename/ ?
Chrome works when I enter //ce/bk_mec/, where ce is my
computer name and bk_mec is the windows shared folder.
Huh? The OP wanted to-
How do you do this with Chrome, since I'm unaware of any way to install a working Chrome on the PB?. Anyhow, this thread is almost two years old, when the PB was on OS 1 and before the PB's android player was implemented. Since OS 2 dropped along with its android player, what the OP was asking for, i.e, the ability to browse network resources without needing a server running on his laptop, has been easy using Ghost Commander, ES File Explorer, X-Plore, and maybe other android apps.
I've been using ES File Explorer. It needs sideloading, but once that's done and it's set up it does the job very well. You can just swipe across from your local files to network devices or cloud services. (I've come to consider it as an always install thing for android devices - it would be the same for the playbook except for the sideloading thing.) Can't recall where I got the bar file from though - sorry about that.
