If they still have 1000 people employed wouldn't they be doing something. The way things work these days if total production stopped it probably would of hit the airwaves by now. It is easily speculative to state likely packaging date too, who really knows.
They started with 3000 employees and laid-off 1000, leaving 2000. The factory is speculated to be Playbook only.

Anyone here got a Kindle fire ?

If it was made in China then the PB line in Taiwan was set up exclusively for that.

I just a bought a 32gb today and the date on box says 260411 , i guess these are the early units
Should I be expecting issues , like bulge and recessed power button ?

What 's the consensus on unit dates ?

My 32GB boxed on 030311 has a flushed power button. My 64GB boxed on 040112 has a slightly raised power button. Both PBs are perfect in all other ways - no dead and/or stuck pixels, bulges, etc.

Depends where you bought your unit I know when I was looking for my 32gb Future Shop & Bestbuy PB's were all dated around the same date as yours, my unit came from Staples.
I am not sure the sure the date on the box is the actual manufacturing date of the Playbook, you will find quite a bit info on the matter as it been discussed previously.
Yes there is a chances that unit manufactured at a later date will have the issues you mention rectified.

I Ordered my 64 GB Playbook from Newegg on 2/4 and it was delivered on 2/8. $299 with free shipping. The MFG Date on mine says "Made in Taiwan - Accessories Made in China 010611". Looks like June 1st. The one thing I Definitely noticed vs a Demo Unit I tested at a Best Buy here is the the Power Button, while still tiny, is significantly easier to power on and off, to the point that is is not a nuisance at all.

I believe the box dates are packaging dates and we should probably looking at the PIN and/or Serial Numbers for better comparisons and better indicators of manufacturing dates. Mine for example:

    16gb, Box Date: 080411 S/N: 1343-2xxx-xxxx PIN: 500Exxxx (letters and numbers)
    64gb, Box Date: 160511 S/N: 1343-8xxx-xxxx PIN: 5019xxxx (all numbers)

16gb has flush power button, no bulges, no dead pixels
64gb has raised power button, no bulges, no dead pixels

I have suspected that a date of manufacture is probably located INSIDE the pb.

I don't know if it is true but in the photo on ifixit showing a breakdown of the innards, the tag at the lower left or a similar tag could have a date on it.

Again, I say the date on the box means nothing more than the date it was put in the box, not the date it was manufactured, s/n is much more likely to be better indicator.

    64GB boxed 040112 S/N 1344-35nn-nnnn PIN 50214xxx

My 32GB was boxed before your 16GB with a lower S/N. However, my PIN is later than yours.

Right, that's what I'm talking about, I have had a couple of other PBs with PIN/Box Date/Serial Number conflicts, but the only thing I am fairly sure of is that box dates are not manufacture dates.

Can someone open his PlayBook and let see if there is some production timeframe traceability inside?

Anyway, I will be based my assumption that RIM is still producing PlayBook as per their continual support affirmation... not on some manufacturing dates...

Right, that's what I'm talking about, I have had a couple of other PBs with PIN/Box Date/Serial Number conflicts, but the only thing I am fairly sure of is that box dates are not manufacture dates.
On May 13, RIM recalled 935 PBs and listed the affected serial numbers---which were all over the map. The only thing common was that they were all 16GB units shipped to Staples stores. The list: http://m.engadget.com/default/article.do?artUrl=http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/14/rim-recalls-at-least-900-faulty-blackberry-playbooks-here-are-t/&category=classic&postPage=1

So whereas no valid conclusions can be drawn from serial number alone, if the date on the box is indeed merely the boxing date, then it's reasonable to conclude that the unit was actually manufactured before it was boxed
