    I bought a a 32g Playbook December 22 and the build date
was 4-21-11. I happened to see a few 16g at the time
and the latest build date I could find was 5-11-11
I'm wondering if they stopped producing them because of the
lack of sales and the tremendous inventory. Out of curiousity
If you just purchased a Playbook, what is your build date ?

A Collins Stewart analyst said on Thursday that RIM may have halted PlayBook production and canceled additional tablet projects.

"We believe RIM has stopped production of its PlayBook and is actively considering exiting the tablet market," Collins Stewart semiconductor analyst John Vihn wrote in a note.

He cited last week's news that contract manufacturer Quanta Computer had laid off a significant number of workers at a factory focused on producing the PlayBook.

"Additionally, our due diligence indicates that RIM has canceled development of additional tablet projects," Vihn wrote.

Not all Playbooks are produced from the same source. My understanding is that RIM had a contract with this company, but they were unhappy with the workmanship from this particular supplier, including recessed power buttons and bulges in the back of the tablet and decided not to renew orders from this specific supplier. My guess is that John Vinh owns Apple products supplied for free while toiling for a British publication owned by Rupert Murdoch.

RIM over-estimated the demand for the original release of their tablet (as did most every tablet vendor except Apple). Hence the large write-down of inventory last quarter and all the sales. They need to clear their existing backlog before manufacturing any new units.

I susupect we will see a new version later in 2012 with upgraded hardware specs, but not until they've depleted the current stock.

The good news is the quality and specs of the current release os so good that it won't be obsolete for a while.

RIM is not manufacturing new Playbooks due to the large stockpile of unsold devices.

I really don't think anyone (outside of RIM) knows the answer to this one. We do know that during the firesale, RIM itself ran out of stock on the 16GB tablet and later got more, suggesting that then, at least, the device was still being manufactured; but, its possible that the new stock was from a warehouse someplace, needing weeks to be put into boxes and shipped to Shopblackberry's shipping centers.

Yes, how do you determine the manufacture date?

If you still have the box, on the spline is a sticker bearing the serial number and a six-digit date code directly below "Accessories made in China". Mine is "060411", which in DDMMYY format means April 6---which I received in late Nov from Newegg.

I think all PB's are made by Quanta,if its made in Taiwan, then it's made by Quanta.

That's April 6. Same as the one we got in November. I don't have the boxes for the other two.

I don't think they manufactured any after the firesale. It's very possible the stock was still in Taiwan. It takes about 14 days for a container ship to cross the pacific. The truck hijacked in Indiana was traveling to Ontario. The schedules fit.

I believe I'm winning this horserace. I picked up a 16gb PB at Staples Canada today. Made in Taiwan, build date 13-12-2011.

That's a 13 day turnaround from factory to store in Canada (including Christmas). Clerk said they got them in overnight.

The one I bought 3 weeks ago at BestBuy Canada was bulit in May 2011.

Whoa, that's an exciting milestone! And it wasn't a refurb, right?

So maybe they did really deplete the inventory. In that case, come on TAT, let's see that Cascades soon! I want to start laying down some code!
