    Hi,

I'm facing a big mystery, I do not understand. And it don't like that.

My girlfriend is a fan of Blackberry and has a BB Bold 9900 and BB Playbook. Me, I like BB but I have a preference for Apple ...

I took earlier my girlfriend's PB to put her music from my computer.

Everything goes as planned. I played with the PB, when after some time, no battery. PB tells me that there is 3% battery. I realize that I forgot the charger to my girlfriend. So I decided to load it with one of my chargers granted with a micro USB cable.
And here the problems begin ...

I first tries with my Apple iPad charger (5.1V - 2.1A) PB is not charging. Bizarre.

So I try with my Apple iPhone charger (5V - 1A) The PB is not charging.

I try with an no name iPhone charger bought 2 in an Italian Market (5V - 1A) The PB is not charging.

I despair but I remember that I have an new Apple charger in my iPhone box.

So I try with the Apple iPhone charger (5V - 1A) and... It works! The PB charge! While the charger is identical to the previous two!

So a question ... WHY?? How do you explain that? Knowing that 4 chargers work perfectly with my iPhone or iPad. Explain how one works for PB?

    Thank you enlighten me,

    Guillaume

PS: sorry for my bad english

By not charging, does the symbol not change at the top or does it just never increase in %?

The Apple products do not typically follow the USB specifications, which require a charge source capable of more than 500ma to signal this capability via a resistance across the data lines of the socket. If a special charge cable is used, this will be signalled via the cable. So, for chargers wired for Apple devices, you typically need to use a specialised charge cable when charging a PlayBook in order for the Playbook to try to draw more than 500ma from the charge port.

By not charging, the battery icon doesn't change. No lightning icon or anything. But if the screen is extinct, when I connect the PB to the charger, the screen turn on. But that's all.

I don't understand why one Apple charger is ok but the others aren't ok... And the no name charger hasn't Apple specs. It's just an "classic" charger. However it doesn't work.

Not all chargers are created equal I find. Also PB is pretty finicky with having the right charger for it, just like iPad.

Actually, you are very lucky with the outcome that you had. Sometimes, if the PB gets very low in charge, it is difficult to get it to charge with even the BBRY supplied chargers. Just use the charger made for the PB, either rapid or USB, and you will be much better off in the long run. Also, the PB microUSB port is a little different in shape, e.g. not as trapezoidal (angular) as most. Sometimes people put the plug in with the wrong orientation. The PB USB charging cable should have the BBRY logo up. So with other chargers with only a USB logo, you risk damaging the USB port. It is really not a question that you want to risk damaging the equipment over.

Not only is the PlayBook plugged in what is usually considered upside down with the shorte side o the trapezoid up facing the screen but also the chargibg wire has the data cables shorted together. If you isert the plug in the micro USB port , which is type AB, incorrectly you can seriously damage the port. If your charging wire is not correct the PB will at best allow a small rate of charge well below the rate needed to sustain operation.

As has been suggested the BB PB chargers which use the magnetic port are a good investment.

Thank you for your answers. The charge of PB is full of mysteries. and caprices! Indeed the rapid charger seems to be a good investment.

Indeed! In fact, if you are not using your PlayBook for a longer time (or while using it) and the battery reached its critical level wherein it can no longer boot by itself, you'll be needing to perform the so-called "stack charging" with a charger that has 1.8amp (minimum) to revive it. There are already a lot of theories about this phenomenon including the "alien conspiracy theory" (i.e. that the PlayBook was an alien design and that's explain also, accordingly, why BlackBerry cannot update it, and so on) but still none of them gave a clear and logical reason...

Unfortunately, we don't know all the BBRY engineering information and all we can go by are observations and problems reported by members of this forum during daily use. I didn't even know that Apple products could be charged USB...I thought they all had that Lightning connector. LOL. I do agree that the magnetic rapid charger is one of the best things about the PlayBook. I wish all my devices had this and this was a standard charging design. The microUSB is so fragile. I can connect the magnetic charger in the dark and it fully charges in a couple of hours.

I have seen this with dead car batteries, and there is a trick to getting them going.
Hook up another battery to the charger via a set if jumper cables at the same time. It's just another battery mystery that happens to work.

With that in mind, I wonder if you could use a t adapter with the PlayBook and a BlackBerry phone to accomplish the same thing. Please do not ask me to try with my devices.

Yes I use adaptator. I'm sorry my english is not good. When I said "charger" I said that for "adaptator". All my Apple adaptators were used with the Blackberry USB/Micro USB cord.

Ahhh. That makes more sense. Just a side note. I've also had trouble finding an external battery power source for the PB. Even though the output is 2 amps, the external battery may not charge and show the lighning bolt. I have only found a few that actually work. So there is something special about the power delivery.

See post 9. The Micro USB cord used for tranzferring data will only alllw a small current flow to the PB. You have to use a charging cord. The charging cord supplied with the HP TouchPad will work and you may be able to get a suitable cord from an electronics shop . The data wires musr be connected together.

Pretty easy on the PB with the magnetic travel charger which attaches to the three pin magnetic port. Charging up the women can some times be done with moolah and most men really don't need to truly understand them.
