You could always use a photo editing program and resize it to 1024 x 600 then there will be no reason for it to zoom or crop
I believe you want resize the image to 1024 x 600. Follow this like about wallpapers for the Playbook. That willget you going.

since I'm the guy who has made a sh!t load of wallpapers, it doesn't mean a thing whether you make your walls in 1024x600 or 1024x1024, the annoying thing the playbook likes to do is zoom in on the wallpaper and mess it up....but there is a "template" you can follow that someone posted (sorry I forget who) on this forum.. if you cant find it then I can always post mine...

Unfortunately, that is the way that feature was implemented. Possibly so that it works in both Landscape and Portrait. So folks have gone to manual editing/zoom/etc of the picture and then set it as wallpaper.
