The Kindle Fire can do it. Fine. Now lets talk about what the Fire can't do. No cameras, no GPS, no bluetooth, no HDMI, and only 8 gigs of internal storage. I'll keep my PB.
We've offered you a few options in here and you appear to be ignoring them. A few people, myself included have suggested LAN File Explorer, have you even checked that out yet?
Omg not for nothing, but this is Trolling or the op is just lazy.
Come on man When I'm at home I don't use my iPad2 to watch
movies I use my 50" TV. Playbook has a lot of movies for on the go
Splashtop works. if you want to do online video streaming then try
crackle.com hbogo maxgo and endless amount of pirate sites
that the Playbook can stream movies from. Also you can get
other sites to work for you u like Hulu and Netflix if you're not lazy.
There's also tablet TV. All these stuff work on the go
I've read this thread and someone mentioned an app called Land File. Could not find it. But I guess it is called Lan File. Stupid auto correction.
Lan file explorer from app world works great.
Kindle Fire or an LG Television.
I have to say that I am torn as to how I should respond to the remarks made on this thread. I also wanted to use my amazing PlayBook for streaming video and I am highly disappointed by the fact that Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime ABC, etc don't work. People here are always "trolling" & get upset if someone says anything that isn't a stellar review of the PlayBook. I think we can all agree that the PlayBook is an amazing piece of hardware but it's obvious that RIM has fallen so far behind in the App race that even attracting developers is nearly impossible.
I am keeping my PlayBook for email, scheduling, the camera and note taking and have already decided that I'm buying an IPad or a Kindle Fire to use for Netflix & Amazon Prime, cloud services and yeah, apps that work and don't have to be sideloaded. I respect everyone's opinions on here and it's sad that a person can't express their unhappiness without everyone jumping all over them.
I love my PlayBook too but I WANT a full tablet experience.
Happy Easter everyone...
Agree. Works kinda like plex or xbmc in that it does not re-encode the videos. Also tablet tv picks up many legal streaming sites. I can get my amazon prime account to work on it.
cdelcampo216 The problem is the OP got a solution to his question and refuses to use it.
That to me is a Troll.
Lan file explorer, Splashtop, SonicAir any of these will work.
I personally use PLayon to stream Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime
and you can watch other stuff like ABC,ESPN ect.
on the go on the PB
PlayOn has a beta setup for local LAN files as well. It worked with an MP4 with AC-3 sound. Converted it on the fly to something the PB could play. Copying the file to the PB yielded no sound. OP, there are many options to do what you want. Give'em a try and let us know what works for you.
I am now playing an mp4. At the top of the screen is the line of text:
"The media format may not be supported by the Blackberry Playbook" (at the end of that line is a BACK button).
But the film is playing fine. Anyway to get rid of that line of text at the top of the screen?
edited to add: Ah, the little "full screen" icon in the lower right (and try not to hit the mute icon)
and none of the playbook features you list are required for streaming, so they are pointless, and make the kindle a better product for his needs.
the op whines about what it can't do. you list a bunch of things it doesn't need to do.
it's no wonder the majority of playbook users appear to be uneducated imbeciles.
Use Splashtop
I tried all Orb, PlayOn, SubSonic (/w SonicAir), Android Players, Lan Explorer. One that works the best so far is Lan Explorer and SubSonic. None of these are as polished or convenient as AirVideo on iOS.
Lan Explorer:
- Relatively polished
- Does not require transcoding (uses Video Player of PB)
- Compatibility limited to what's supported by PB's VideoPlayer
SubSonic:
- Plays everything a PC or Mac can play (transcoding)
- Lacks decent client on PB (Subsonic comes close but had issues with navigating directories on FreeNAS server)
- Expensive (compared to AirVideo)
- Web Client works but controls are not ideal (too small)
I saw this, read the description and immediately purchased it. It's not plex or air video but it's pretty functional, and let's you move files with ease between your Mac, PC and PlayBook.
For 99 cents, recommended.
What you have spent, you can not buy any tablet (cheapest competitive tablet will cost you minium $300 for 16GB) but i m pretty sure, you can buy portable DVD player and its best option for you as Playbook media player is not upto standard to you. :p
Fact is, the PlayBook isn't the best tab if streaming is important for you.
I don't know man...sounds to me like a lot of the supposed "answers" are trolling, or maybe the better word is hating in this case. The PBs ability to stream is severely limited and RIM did not deliver on DLNA, and it is doubtful they ever will. For me that was one of the main selling points, but it does not work and most likely never will.
I am an avid BB supporter, only own BB devices, and I still love my PB, but call a spade a spade.
This is very true, sadly...
yes, this is what you're looking for
While I appreciate the helpful responses, I already said I did not want to convert movies to play on the Playbook. LAN file explorer doesn't solve my issue since I'd have to convert basically all my movies/TV to be able to watch them.
And neither does Splashtop, since the interface is just not what I want. It's too... messy. It's crazy there's nothing clean out there we can use. It's unfathomable to me.
I am definitely one of the posters who responded sarcastically. I personally feel that if you bought a PB in November solely to stream and specifically on netflix then you got what you deserve. It was clear netflix was not available.
If you then go on to say you haven't touched it in 6 months as you wait for different streaming capability then I have no idea what to tell you. You choose to ignore the other capabilities of this device? The web browsing, the music player, the email and calendar, the games and other apps, the docs to go functionality, the high def video, and the camera?
You ignore all the streaming options that do exist including streaming directly which I do constantly. I stream from espn3, the history channel, amazon prime, pbs, cbs (I watched the whole bball tournament on my PB), as well as just about every other site I went directly to.
Finally you declare you will get an iPad even though all you want to do is stream movies. Why not get a kindle? Its the same size as the tablet you bought and won't cost you $600.
These are the reasons for my sarcastic response. I find the problem too absurd to either be an honest one or be posted by anyone who I could ever help as there are too many layers of missteps and odd behavior.

It's just amazing the number of people who reply here without reading. Netflix? Where did I say I wanted to use Netflix? I have ZERO interest in Netflix.
Is it really THAT crazy to expect to be able to stream ANY video format from my HOME computers to my Playbook?
Good grief...
You PB Fanboys should be banned for Trolling, jesus i cant believe the amount of aggressive posts the OP got for asking a simple question.
infact im going to report all of you who's replies were unnecessarily aggressive.
