The playbook already supports AAC audio, unless you meant AC3, which it doesn't. I'm not sure if AC3 is in the cards but I've read that OS2.0 will support .mkv so ac3 audio would be a nice cherry on top.
Having said that there are a number of programs available online you can use to convert video to a more palatable format for your pb. Many users seems fond of handbrake. I use sothink video converter which adds a periodic, very small watermark if you use the free image but gets the job done. You can also look for free video converters for devices such as the ps3/xbox as they have similar codecs and support higher resolution video.
Here is information on the media formats supported on the Playbook:

If you google DVDVideo Soft, they have a great freeware suite. Its very clean and eady to use, just say no to their toolbar. No ads or syware, I promise! Whole suite of apps including Video to BB Playbook
Vingilot,
I use Pavtube's iMedia converter for my blu-rays and dvds. They have versions for both Mac and Windows. You have to pay for it, but I haven't found anything easier to use. They have a whole slew of formats you can convert to. Not only the playbook, but also the blackberry phones as well.

I also use their ByteCopy for converting my blu-rays to .mkv files. It takes me just a couple of minutes to set it up, and then hit go and leave for a dinner and come back and it is done. Easy peasy!
I know a lot like handbreak and a few other ones, but my personal opinion, pavtube has worked the best for me. PLUS, I didn't have to know anything about formatting. I just clicked a few buttons and off I went.
I hope that helps...
thanks guys i'll try out your suggestions, best of luck
