Can someone explain why we need a DEVELOPER Beta for 2.1? Is it due to the new APIs and Android multitasking?

APIs I believe for the most part. The Android runtime multitasking doesn't really need a Dev beta as the basic premise of this is to run a different instance of the runtime.

Will there be a bridge update with this release? If so, will it be a general release or only in the beta zone?

I can imagine Clewley reading these threads and just laughing maniacally as his fingers hover over the "PlayBook Dev 2.1 Update" button
These kind of comments just make me laugh. I know it's a joke, but c'mon, you know they're probably scrambling to get this stuff out of the gate

They announced that bridge sms should function on 2.1. However, I'm under the impression that the bb app is already pretty good-to-go, it's the pb's side that needs updating. Pretty sure you'll have to register to get this os. It's a developers beta. If you joined in the 2.0 beta you can probably expect something like that

A joke is meant to make you laugh so it has done its job.

If they are scrambling they are doing it wrong. Software developers who scramble usually get egg on their face according to ancient Chinese proverb. My guess is the newest crop of students hired will be in charge of maintaining the BBOS2.1 code base. Production release shortly after BB10 smartphone debuts in Q4 coincide with the student's return to school.

Theoretically, if you are running PlayBook OS 2.0, you are running BB10 in it's infancy. While there is still much to finish and alter, OS2 and BB10 are one in the same.

    What TW93 said

Clewley says now that a blog post is coming to answer questions about 2.1. Its likely the link to register for 2.1 will be in the blog post. Stay tuned I think today may be the day fellow playbookers.

Maybe they are holding back the release just in time for the earnings call. Combined with the lay-offs set to happen this week the stock price will likely collapse.

If it's today, it will most likely have to come before 5pm EST as I doubt they will post something after the work day has ended.

Not trying to be negative, but I have a feeling it will be more around tomorrow at lunch.

    No.

Nothing featured at BlackBerry World 2012 regarding BB10 will be featured on the PlayBook until after BB10 is officially launched later this year

This update is targeted at Devs as it is a BETA for 2.1.

2.1 will bring new features, just one's not mentioned or showcased predominantly at BBWC12.

    Things like:
    Wifi Bridge
    SMS Bridge
    Portrait Message App
among other smaller improvements throughout the OS.

This update is not a final build of 2.1, so certain features may be missing or not working to their fullest.

    Silly me.

Should we also be expecting a Bridge update that will bring the necessary updates to the phone, or are they already built in.
