If I were to backup my phone, wipe it, then restore... would it help in any way towards performance? Like a good cleaning in a way.

Some people suggest wipeing the phone when you install a new OS but I do not think it is necessary to just wipe it unless you are having issues.

I have found a significant increase in File Free immediately after a wipe and restore. The Content Store is one database that gets a lot smaller after a wipe / restore. You can also clear the Content Store using the Advanced tab in Desktop Manager, so a wipe isn't necessary to do that. Wiping and restoring is not without risk, since you could lose everything if your restore fails, but it does seem to have some benefits.
