Hi all this is probably a dumb question but ill ask anyway.

I just got an Orange branded BB off ebay its running 4.2.0.67. Now I am in Australia and on the Optus network. I have noticed on their site that they have an Optus branded software upgrade.....

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.1.164 (Chinese & English)

Package Version: 4.2.1.164
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.2.1.101
* Software Platform: 2.3.0.80
* File name: 8100C_PBr4.2.1_rel164_PL2.3.0.80_A4.2.1.101_Optus. exe
* File size: 68.17MB

How safe or unsafe is it for me to install this on my Orange branded BB 8100???

Any advice would be greatly apprecieted

completely safe

the OS is provided by RIM, not by the carriers.
Even the branding for all the different carriers is included in every OS.
