you can do it by BBM though..

So do they also have to be a bbm user or can they have any phone on any carrier?

They need a BB to use BBM doesn't matter the carrier as long as they have a BB. You cant send MMS on Sprint.

yeah the only way to do it would be to email their sprint email address. sucks huh?

Don't know why they would disable it, but yes, you'll have to send it through email. Sprint is weird like that.
