    If there is not enouh "file free" then the BB device goes into a conservation mode. For the 8130 that number appears to be 12. Is it 12 for all other BB devices

    This is pretty much a Pearl issue due to the lower memory but the Curves I believe are similar if you get that much on the file memory.

    If you are running OS 4.3, than yes, you fall below 12mg and you will lose SMS's, e-mails, call logs. I am running 4.5 and the number is lowered to 5mg, alot better. This is not available from Verizon, i am running a different carrier's OS, but that is a story for later. You need to get the preinstalled junk off of your device. Check out this thread and it will give you a better idea of what i mean...
