I have a Pearl 8120.

Is there a quick way to enable multitap rather than accessing the menu ?

Also is there a numberlock other than holding the alt-key?

I find it fiddly when inputting web and email addresses, and passwords which suretype doesn't recognise.

There used to be a shortcut for it, but it seems that in OS 4.2+, the shortcut was removed. YOu used to be able to hold down the * and it would switch.... But your phone isn't going to do that I'm sure, so you'll have to go to the menu.
