I would like to password protect my device, but I'm afraid to hit enable if I don't know if there is already a password. I know some phones come with a pre-assigned password. If I hit enable and I have never assigned a password, will it ask me for one?
I sure done't want to lock my phone and loose all my information.

When you hit enable, it will ask you for a password and you'll have to enter it twice. I have an 8830 and did not have a pre-set password.

No, it wont ask you for one. But it will ask you to create one, and if you forget it you'll only get ten times to try and put it in correctly before it automatically wipes your phone.

Make sure you're doing this:

Menu > Options > Security Options > General Options > Change to Enabled > Menu Key > Save > Enter New Password 2x

When you disable the password (if ever), it'll ask you for the password.
Then, when you re-enable the password, you have the opportunity at that time to use the old password or enter a new one.
