I had a Handspring Treo 300, All the flip did was cover the keyboard and put a window over the screen. I loved that phone, 1st Qwerty smartphone.
That was my first smartphone as well. IIRC, there was a speaker in the cover so you had to flip it open to use it. It and the GSM 270 were revolutionary device for their time (2003?) as the first color display smartphones running POS. Naturally, they came from Handspring, not Palm.
The HTC flip-smartphone was branded the Cingular 3125 in the US, and I have no idea what its original name was.
This is what it looked like:
Startrek was the official moniker for this device, far from a BlackBerry though, ran WinMob 5, believe it or not I speak to people on a daily basis who SWEAR by this device.
The 1st flip smartphone I had was the Samsung i500. I could never seem to hold onto this phone. I have no idea what it was made of, but in order to use it, I needed superglue in my hands- cause it was bound to go flying out.
Personally, I don't like the moving parts. Too many places for dirt to get into and parts to break. The only benefit I see to a flip is being able to put it in my pocket and not accidentally dial someone when I bend over
