the trackball led and the screen are both light sensitive. if you want to light them both up temporarily, hold your thumb over the red led on the top right corner of the phone (probably will not work in very vright sunlight). if you want to keep it lit up all the time, i dont know what to tell you. there may be an app for that but i dont know.
yes. the trackball and keypad only light up when the ambient light (background light) around you is dark. This is to illuminate the keypad in low-light situations so you can see the keys, while not wasting battery power when you are in a bright enough area to see the buttons.
