Is there a way to have apps install on a memory card instead of the device memory as the device memory is 5mb and my card is 8gb

Unfortuantely no. However, you can clear up quite a bit of device memory by just following a few tips. First, be sure to put all of your pics and vids on your card, as they kill memory quickly. Second, if you use your browser quite a bit then be sure to clear the cache out frequently by opening up your browser>hit the menu key and select options>select cache operations and hit clear cache and cookies. This frees up some room to. And last but not least, remember to delete emails and messages that you don't need anymore. They take up device memory as well and don't give out warnings like "normal" phones do when they get close to being full. If you do all of this and still don't have enough room, then you may just have to upgrade to the tour like I did! lol just kidding. Good luck!

You can also use CrackMem to remove unused apps and samples from your memory, that install with the OS.

Or do it the old fashioned way:
