If I forgo internet service on my blackberry, is there a way to get gmail?

It seems to me I remember seeing gmail being accessible to regular cell phone users. Not sure.

The Pearl is free on Verizon... thinking of getting it while wait for the next slew of new Verizon phones.

Verizon will not sell you a BlackBerry without a BlackBerry data
plan nor can you cancel it.
If you go with another carrier you will need some type
of internet plan or WiFi.

unfortunately your out of luck, I wanted to do sort of the same thing, but verizon shot me down. As stated above other carriers besides ATT might give you alternative options but through Verizon your out of luck.
