Is there a setting on the 8130 that you can set for how often the Pearl checks for email on your server? My old Treo had a setting; Default was every 15 minutes and you could save battery by setting it to check at longer intervals. I have done searchs here but found nothing.

The Treo uses "pull" email, which goes and gets the email, so adjustable times could be set - Blackberries use "push", which is sent as it comes in.
