    Besides the side buttons - how can I assign a shortcut key to an application? Looks like I can assign a speed dial to a key, but not open an application.

    To my knowledge, the side keys are your only shortcut keys for opening apps.

    Yep VZWBB is correct, only the side convenience keys can be user assigned.
