I did a quick search but came up empty.

This is the problem--when calling certain companies you need to spell out the name of the person that you are calling via your phone to get the correct extension. With the QWERTY keyboard, this does not work.

Is there an App or a way to do this properly without having to memorize where the lettes are on an old 12 button phone?

you have to hold down the sift key when inputing letters instead of numbers.

for example- 1-800-BESTBUY you dial the 1800 then hold shift (or it could be the alt key, bottom left hand corner) and input the name BESTBUY. I'm assuming this is the case for spelling out people's name on an automated system but I am not 100% sure. I guess it depends on whether the phone system uses dial tone recognition or not.
