I saw this today and I was sure it was a joke, but now I think it's for real. It's called the Arubixs Portal, and it gives a nod to Blackberry for past phone innovation.

Since it's based out of San Francisco, it might get favorable buzz (the Hype Machine around Silicon Valley is kind of insane), despite being 10x more bizarre than the BB Passport. Just thought BB Passport fans would like to know that the Passport is _far_ from the most aberrant modern device.

CNET even mentioned it (and couldn't make up their mind if it's a joke or not):

Sure the current integration is pretty ugly, looking something like an ancient Roman piece of armor, but it's a neat idea. With some refinement over time it should be pretty cool.

    It's not a thing.
It's an idea. In the video they only show mockups.
Making a futuristic device like that with just 300k dollars with flexible funding (meaning if they only get $1000, they get only that) and sell for under $400 is completely impossible.
Canonical tried to raise over 30 million dollars for the ubuntu phone
Blackberry spent over one billion dollars for BB10

Begs the question, who needs or wants this?

I see value in the durability for the those that are careless with their phone but no benefits after that.

And why is this in the Passport forum?

50k / person - that's cheap. They should have asked for 10 mil. and justify it by making the phone "100% green" and "carbon free"

Wait, that's really an idea ...

They must have a time machine and went in the future to get this display technology:
Yes, this insane crowdfunded phone is actually a thing-upaub8g.png

    Or... they're just scammers

I think they are onto something. How many people you see running/exercising with a phone wrapped around their arm with earplugs or buying waterproof bag to take their phone to the beach and take underwater pictures or prevent sand from getting to it? I dislike that look arm-wrapped phone look, and the waterproof bags are OK when they are not hanging around the neck with a strap. I prefer leaving the phone in my bag and take my underwater camera instead.

Now, to have this thing on you all the time like a watch is ridiculous. However, I think they are onto something.

I wouldn't say "sadly." It is a neat concept and seems they are onto something. I'd buy one, but not to have on my wrist all the time (or even not on my wrist at all. I don't even wear my phone strapped to my arm and ear buds while riding my bike on the trails.

Now I'm sure it's a scam. There is no way such diverse technologies can be put together with only 300k.

BBRY spent a fortune on BB10 as an OS - the hardware... not so much. Typ I ally they run hardware costs about 100 to 150 per device

Flexible screens are definitely not abnormal. And batteries can be created in a malleable format, if they chuck Android OS on there and recycle low cost Chinese chip manufacturing - 350 is definitely doable. But it doesn't leave a lot of room for profit or error.

If it was past POC and actually available I'd buy one for gimic purposes

They clearly aren't marketing this as a device to watch porn on. The screen would be way too shaky to be of any use.
