Yes, for English. No, generally. The keyboard lacks many keys for comfortable writing. And touching the virtual keyboard while using the physical keyboard gives a really bad experience.

You don't need to touch the virtual keyboard at all on passport assuming you know how to use it.

Swipe down from physical keyboard and you get remapped keys. There's a bunch of features that avoid having to tap the touch screen.

What he said^^
plus, actually touching the screen is SO EASY or I must be some kind of real pro at it, doesn't impact my experience at all to touch the screen. Like, really? OMFG the things people find hard amazes me more and more each day!

The majority of times, the required character appears on the one line directly above the physical keys. The rest? They're available within thumb reach. So friggin' easy, unbelievably simple, absolutely 100% doable.

Thanks for reminding me this. But I don't think it is productive (let alone inspiring) way of typing. For example a dot would require two keyboard swipes + one key press.
I always wonder why BlackBerry didn't improve its keyboard layout. The non-standard 3-row Passport or 4-row Classic keyboard is specifically tailored for English only. A full ANSI-compatible layout needs only 50 - 60 keys and can host many international keyboards.

No you just need to double tap space to end sentence. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNVT95S6_eE

I disabled it, and auto-correction altogether. When I double press spacebar, I expect double spaces, not dot. And the dot is just an example of the general productivity issue. But thanks!
