Not now but eventually this will be where we are heading as with phablets and such. Phones are getting bigger and therefore, screens as well and the ratio will get wider. If you want a smaller screen, stick with your smart watch only.

The standard ratios for devices are 16:9 or 4:3, if you want it wider you simply need to turn your phone or tablet. 16:9 is dominant because most people like to watch HD movies on there device. People will always want larger screens but there is nothing to suggest they want square screens, certainly not the Passport sales numbers.

BlackBerry and Google were collaborating on 1:1 support on Android before the Priv launched but both decided it wasn't worth it.

Android supports 4:3 already so OEM's that need something "wide" already have a pretty good option.

The main goal of "Material design" (the design guidelines of Android 5+) was that all apps should be able to adapt to any screen size. This makes multi-window and resizing apps on Chromebooks and stuff possible. There is absolutely no reason why Android can't support 1:1 now.

No one else can install Android on a Passport, as they don't have the signing keys.

ahh... but they can still call it a Passport if it has a slider....and it would be closer to the google arbitrary 4:3 magical dimensions instead of the Blackberry super-practical 1:1's. Problem solved. But really what's so hard about 1:1 anyway, just another dimension added to Google's immaterial design. What good design has ever come out of a super-conglomorate over-glorified advertising agency anyways? Android? ha ha ha ha...

There was a one-off, in-house experiment within BlackBerry a year or two ago.

Sold on ebay to one lucky individual last summer, I think.

As designers point of view the 3:2 is best because 1 inch there represent almost 1 inch in real world!
As move lovers point of view the 16:9 and more wider is best because it somehow gives you the files of surround view!
As book lovers point of view(at least people who love to read on E-devices) 1:1 is best because it is more pleasant to read on this kind of screen!
And AFAIK phablet and tables are mostly second group, which means 1:1 won't came to this group!

For 3:2 you can check Microsoft's AIO reviews which almost every one said the same fact!
For 16:9 it is really obvious
About 1:1 maybe not true cause it mostly based on my own observations!

As a designer, your first statement makes no sense whatsoever.

For your second, 16x9 is just the HDTV ratio decided upon back in the early 90s. It doesn't even match any existing theatrical aspect ratios exactly.

Third... I've never seen a 1:1 (square) dedicated e-reader.
