There are so many asking the same question!
Because

They didn't have enough money for 4. Only 3.

Because some nerd sent a proposal to John Chen who was probably eating a burger at the time, he burped and thought it was an innovative and ground breaking design and as CEO he then approved it and thus all the dweebs at BB then started to make it and work on it.
Maybe ?
Why not 5? Or 6?

Chen had nothing to do with the passport design it was started before he joined BlackBerry.
And three us perfect.

Maybe they doses it that way cause it's easier to hit the correct spelling of the word on the screen? hehe

Ya, Chen and BlackBerry are idiots for making this phone that no one can get a hold of cuz it's sold out everywhere. Huuuuuge mistake.
Providing three rows gives you the more space for the screen, giving you complete screen independence... and one row is virtually...

Hopefully BlackBerry did it to **** specifically you off.

And the keys are actually bigger.

I heard a rumour they wanted to provide Typo an opportunity to create an add-on for the missing rows.

To maximize screen real estate. The keyboard is QWERTY with many of the innovative things found on the touch screen keyboard, such as word flicking, swipe to delete words, and is touch enabled.
I've grown to love the versatility of the keyboard.

Because they couldn't get it done with two
Because 4 is an unlucky number for Chinese and JC will have none of that. ;-)

Cheaper to manufacture.

3 rows is a great idea.
All the frequently typed keys are physical keys while the less frequently used ones are soft keys.
All the benefits of hardware keyboard + context sensitive software keyboard.
On top of that, it also has swipe/flick etc. Absolutely great innovation. Its the only reason people are interested in BB again.
My only issue is that kbd is a little too low and there won't be much space to hold the phone while typing (one handed). Yet to try it though, waiting for 10th Oct to try it in Mumbai.
Chinese people will beat the cr*p out of you if you keep saying 444444444...... ;D

Well, the Passport was specifically designed for the Peevishlicious Crew. As the Official Accountant of the Peevishlicious Crew I Personally don't have this issue but I'm certainly in a positions to speak for the rest of them when I say "a lot of them can't count past three.

Err I was just kidding around lol way to get trolled without me trying

Three is innovative, four is not.

Yeah and my comment was serious also lol :)

My real problem with the keyboard is that it doesn't morph into the screen when I'm done typing. BlackBerry produces a piece of shoo shoo again. LAME
