This keynote was very "Canadian" focused, yet they give a $100 discount to Americans. And somebody explain this crap please.

Ya but what do you mean he doesn't know...? WHAT KIND OF CEO DOES NOT KNOW WHY IT IS PRICED THE WAY IT IS. Like he's funny and all but he never explains himself ever it's very frustrating.

Currently the Canadian dollar is 11% weaker than the USD, so at a minimum the phone would be priced at $665 in Canada.

As to the extra 34 bucks, it's not unusual for products in Canada to be priced slightly higher than US due to the ultra-competitive retail environment in the US. But really you're only paying about 6% more...

This does not matter. I live in a border town so I have always frequently gone to the U.S. Throughout my lifetime and I can tell you right now that everything is pretty much priced equally. The power of the dollar has no effect on this 699 vs 599 pricepoint. That is way too big a difference. If they wanted to make it exact and price it at 639 canadian then do that. But that's not what their intentions were with a 699 price point. They simply slapped on another hundred bucks

After all the hype of a $599 price point you can't blame anyone for being at least slightly disappointed with a $100 premium over the US price. Although the current exchange rate would indicate a $665 price point, this is a Canadian company operating in a country that still has decent market penetration for its product. BlackBerry's pricing policy should be Canadian focused first, US at most second especially taking into account that no US carriers have even been confirmed yet, but at least 3 confirmed in Canada weeks ago. Chen's overly casual response to the situation didn't help either, it came across as uncaring and dismissive.

I was going to buy it today thinking it was $599. Maybe it's my fault for thinking it was going to the priced the same in Canada as the USA. I tried buying it on the american BB store and having it shipped to a parcel service but you need an american billing address. They thought ahead on this one.

Oh well, they lost a sale from me until the price goes down a bit. It's sad, especially seeing the CEO say he didn't know why it was more in Canada...

    Seems BlackBerry does too.

All devices on shopblackberry Canada and USA are equal in pricing (z30=499 for example) - except for the passport.
Canadians are "technically" spending less on those devices due to exchange rates.

If the shopBlackBerry website is correct, Chen LIED about 599msrp. US price is listed as 699 (currently on sale/marked down to 599).
Which implies he thinks offering at 699 to Canadians is deal. Wild

I know working for a Canadian company in the consumer goods space is that there are very few if any companies who price their Canadian products the same as the US, it's always higher. Why, because they view that Canadians as a market will pay more than in the US, same as the UK will have their products priced higher than in the US.

Blackberry is not the only company doing it, most companies do. If you don't like it wait to see if the price goes down. It's the law of supply and demand.
