Are you referring to to the strip between the flash LED and the lens? It is there to shield the lens from the flash so it doesn't flare out the picture when the flash fires.

I'm fairly certain half the reason is because that little bit of the back above the metallic strip pops off to reveal the SIM and SD card slots.
Not sure what the other half of the reason is... Design and fashion? Protect the camera? Add a little class?

Thanks for your replies everyone.. one of the strips does seem to be raised a little cos of the sim card..
Cos one of the strips seem to be coming off (just slightly).. what they use to stick the strips? Was thinking of using a double sided tape..
