We sit and wait!!!

I am in no way connected to phone sales or in fact, anything to do with wireless communications. I just happened to love tech and a few hundred dollars every couple of months is not a big deal to me.
Blackberry like any other company is about profit more that supporter loyalty. I think Passport owners will be required to buy new devices if they want the Android experience.
I honestly think promoting the Android runtime and adding the Amazon App store along with killing pretty much all relations with developers in favor of them developing for Android/Amazon App Store was what doomed BB10. Having the runtime was fine but relying on it for apps was never acceptable. Doing so tied BlackBerry to both their ability to implement newer and newer Android runtimes and Android in general.
The last thing the world needs is another Android manufacturer. I think the odds of success are even less there than they realize. There is a market for an Android slider but they'll probably alienate as many customers as they gain in the process.
The Passport in all it's variants will continue to function well for at least a couple years. The Passport may well be the last true BlackBerry device. It's sad but not terribly surprising.
There are people in other countries and even it the states that still use original Curves and Pearls. Just because a device does not have support does not mean it has stopped working. I just got a Q10 a couple of months ago and love it. The best thing that Blackberry has done on the Blackberry 10 phones is that the phone do not rely on the servers to work with internet. When I use to be torn between Blackberry and Android phone I would have to call my carrier and add or take off my BIS plan to use the phone I desired. Now I can just pull the sim out and switch the phone without calling customer service. If it stops being supported I can just buy a used Passport really cheap off people who want flavor of the month phones. I have learned to stop flowing the latest and just try out what I like. I do this by learn different operating systems and getting older used hardware.
You sir are either loaded with money or are buying used phones.
No hate or sarcasm. I hope you enjoy your devices, but a new phone every couple of months would seem excessive for a lot of people.

You didn't stop and think for a second about reselling? When I'm on a roll (haven't been since owning a Passport), I'm getting new devices often like he is. I usually buy used, but still, you assumed he's amassing a mountain of smartphones. I own 2 devices at a time. I will keep my OG as a backup (because it's iconic in my mind), but if I move on to the slider I'll sell my SE.
If you buy/sell strategically, you can upgrade phones often for no extra money out of pocket or very little money. Sometimes you end up making a profit.
Don't be so quick to judge.
Most people in the US don't realize what a phone actually costs, nor do most people buy their own phones outside of a contract upgrade or upgrade plan.
I said in my second sentence "no hate or sarcasm". I don't hate or judge anyone's hustle or their hobbies. By the tone of his message and the actual wording, nowhere does it say I swap this phone for that phone. I also said I hope he enjoys his devices. All I said was buying a new phone every month would seem excessive to some people. There's no judgment and never once did I say he was wrong in buying a phone every month.

It's the necessary ones I'm concerned about. BB10 still has some bugs to be worked out, such as the picture password lag, and contact-specific notifications, which don't work consistently. There's another recent thread on this very topic. While some of the things mentioned in that thread are feature requests, many are requests for fixes to existing BB10 features. One can hope that the coming "security enhancement" updates to BB10 will include some bug fixes as well.
And if they don't?

Absolutely!

You are not speaking for me.

I can bet without lot of risk that you will see bug fixes.
But people wants new features...
Personally, I'm good with bug fixes, enhancements and optimisations.
With a little bit of new there and there.
Not really unrealistic judging the months still left on their roadmap.
I'm still good with my 10months Passport, and I don't like either Android or iOS.

You are not speaking for me that I am not speaking for you
You can get around BIS with your 9900. There are a couple of files that will let you use the BlackBerry browser and services without bis. Just an FYI. Lol, i remember service books.

Well, it seems that some of these issues are user-specific.
I've never noticed a lag on picture password, and I don't use contact-specific notifications, so I have no issues with the current builds. I'm not downplaying problems that affect others, and I hope Blackberry fixes them, but as they don't affect me, I'm not too bothered about my Passport suddenly becoming unusable.
Another year or two, we can 'throw in the towel'... and move on...

Curious as to what the files might be and how to get them and to install them. Thx

Hey crashhound great question!
However bbos10 will still be used and I think we are hopeful to see a bbos 10.3.3 version of the Priv next year! Bbos10 will continue to be around as the security behind bbos10 will always provide a market for it. However you are right due to profitability they may launch future special editions to cater to the shrinking BlackBerry market but I don't think CHEN will discontinue the os altogether! There's a lot of resources financially and technologically invested in bbos10. Passport and classic are nowhere near end of life quite yet. However all prior devices will be end of life next march/april or later. Forcing that market to upgrade to classic or passport or a bbos slider if and when that device launches next year. Chen at this point hinted at the possibility but you never know for sure as business decisions can change in an instant. So don't worry if you are using a passport or classic you'll be fine next year with the major update but really bad if you are using an device older than the classic and passport!

So how did this happen??

There is definitely a way that it can be done, how can you be so sure?

I'm still using my Passport as well, now over a year since buying it. And I expect it to last a while longer, so I'm not really itching for new features. I am concerned about the Android runtime, however. It appears to be frozen in time, and the Kindle app is taking longer and longer to load, with each update (to Kindle, not update to BB10). If the proposed "solution" is "don't update the Kindle app" then, for my purposes, we're entering the endgame.
It'll be trashed.

It's always a mystery why some issues affect some users and not others. I'm certainly not the only person to report picture password lag (i.e., when waking the phone up, it can take a full two seconds for the picture password screen to appear). It doesn't make the phone unusable, but it has caused me to change the screen lock time, in order to avoid that experience.
The lag when answering the phone is also very widely reported. It's not a dealbreaker for me either, but it definitely needs a fix.
And a lot of people are still having problems with contacts, especially if they have both local and cloud contacts. My contacts are entirely cloud-synced, so I have no problems with duplicates, etc. But when I did have local contacts as well, I went through the same mess.
As long as bug fixes keep coming, BB10 should be usable for a few more years, until the Android runtime is just too far behind to be of much use.
I really do not think there is enough of a market for BlackBerry to make a new BB10 phone that does not have run time.
Essentially, current Passport owners will be supported in the same way as the 9900 was. Unlike the 9900 there would be no new production runs.
