I was using a Z10, so my problem is not with virtual KB. None made me feel as comfortable as the Passport's.

Too funny!

After reading through this thread what strikes me the most is that even if the passport does not have any advantage with its square screen, the marketing team was creative enough to come up with the work wide idea that has clearly been a major selling point for an odd looking phone in a sea full of rectangular slabs.
It's refreshing for someone like me who misses the numerous form factors feature phones used to have. Smartphone design to me has become a little boring of late.

I think the OP has conceded that XLS works better on wide screen. And am sure he will concede too on the PDF and other Word Documents.
Websites just optimize for the screen resolution so that you don't need to scroll to your left or right when reading.
It is also interesting to note that OP is comparing phones of different sizes. The Nexus 5 is 4.95", iPhone 6 - 4.7", Z30 - 5" only the Lumia 1020 is the same at 4.5".
Even rendered websites optimized to spill over makes a difference depending on the content. Here's an example (both having the same font size).

To each their own.
For me the things that make a difference with the wider screen:
More text in email subject lines, task lists etc. Lot of applications that use single line to show an item would benefit from extra characters
Space for instant actions, checkboxes on items etc
Reading is really a huge difference when your eyes aren't moving as much from right to left. Even if the screen fits the same number of chars, the typical user will not move their eyes to the bottom: rather they'll read the top paragraph and scroll the screen more often. In user interface design, it's called field of view.
Calendar is nicer in square form factor
Pictures are really nicer in square factor (videos are not)

One of the most honest post I've read in a long time. From a blackberry user. Couldn't agree more

The OP did now clearly show the differences, by only using search engines, this is not a reliable source of differentiation.
Articles and using the reader mode are a better indication of whether this work wide philosophy is what it actually is.

Gold.

Maybe you want to say this
Regardless of what, the OP is a former iPhone user...

Sure, pretty much the same amount of written content can be viewed almost as comfortably on a phone with a 16:9 screen. But what about spreadsheets? X-rays? Stock charts and the like? Reading/writing is not the only thing people will be using the Passport for. Try to think outside of your rectangular box...

I find it easier to read on a wide screen. Simple as that. :)

Far easier to read the text on the passport. Don't get your point unless you are trying to show us the value of working wide. I've also noticed you stayed away from documents and PDF's. That's where the passport really shines.
This is all a preference thing, as has been stated here already.
For me, the Passport screen works better because of how I prefer to use it. I love the fact that I can scroll without touching the screen, making the whole screen visible to me. I still occasionally use all-touch phones (Nexus 5, etc) and when I use them, I keep my thumb hovering over the bottom third of the screen, making that area useless to me. Also, as has already been stated, when the virtual keyboard is up, a lot of the screen is obfuscated.
So, for me the Passport's touch-enabled keyboard is perfect, combined with the wider screen. I can still see a lot of text, and I don't have to touch the screen at all.
Is it perfect? No. However, given the way I use my phone, this is the best setup I've found.
My issue with the desktop mode thing is the speed of Javascript renders many pages unusable. According to Sunspider, my Passport is less than half the speed of an iPhone 6 with respect to javascript. This is most certainly a software issue (Safari and Chrome have invested a lot in optimizing javascript performance) and i hope it gets fixed.
Personally, it does make a difference. Using a standard 16:9 phone I always found myself turning it to landscape to view the bulk of my web browsing. Maximising the horizontal but limiting the amount I can see vertically. The Passport provides a nice compromise between portrait and landscape allowing me to get the best of both. I view almost everything exclusively in desktop mode and the advantages of this is most evident on sites like Crackberry and its forums.
Reading is definitely an achievement compared to the normal screen. Maybe the screen estate is the same on both phones but if you think about how the eyes travel you will see the difference, it has to reset to the beginning of the line less and it also has to travel over fewer lines. Very good for reading.

Shame about the ridiculous 3-row keyboard!

I will definitely agree with you on one thing, viewing the full web site is MUCH better with the passport. There are several sites I could not get an app for on my Passport but when I see how they were rendered in the browser, I just said "well alright!". It also made a shortcut on my home screen that works every bit as well. This may not always be the best but in each case I tried it on, it was probably better than what an app would do for me. Case in Point? The American Express Serve site. Excellent rendering AND excellent shortcut created. That never would have been the case on any other phone.
Their browsers have always struggled with Java script for whatever reason.
Poor programming effort. No other excuse.

You want to know for what the wide screen is nice? Organizing emails with the organization buttons always enabled. Filing, flagging, and trashing emails. You can read most subjects in full. The wide screen is great.
That and writing. Writing is effortless on the Passport. Better than any other keyboard phone for general sentence writing. Though the 4-row keyboards are faster overall, they are less comfortable and long emails are less sustainable over the course of a day. My thumbs don't get tired with the Passport.
That said, I'm back to the Q10 because the size is better for my pockets.
