HI All, does anyone know what Blackberry will work with the changeover with Straighttalk in January 2021. I have 2 Leaps and was told back in September that they will no longer work on Straight Talk. Please any insight from anyone who knows is greatly appreciated. Straight Talk is not helpful at all because they want to sell their phones. Thank you anyone.
If they are dropping their 3g support then it probably means the end of your passport working correctly
Straight Talk is simply an MVNO reseller of T-Mobile service and is subject to shutdown of T-Mobile 3G shutdown in 2021 as spectrum is re-farmed to 5G service.
Nobody is really sure if T-Mobile/Straight Talk are going to block VoLTE from hardware not sold by T-Mobile/Straight Talk directly and recently. Neither party has incentive to support old hardware.
It should still work until they shut down LTE, so your coverage would work in LTE-only areas.
I don't think so. Best guess is that BB10 is not compatible with the newer VoLTE standards.
Based on being unable to reactivate my Z10 on Verizon I'd have to agree. "Being unable to reactivate" here meaning they won't give me a SIM for it and I haven't gotten around to getting an adapter.

May all this limitations on network availability only are effect you guys over there across the pond.. and your monopolistic business bubble ;-)
Here in main Europe our many different network provider still keeping the simpel poor old but reliable GSM alive as a backup for mobile calls, since it is the only widely available frequency covering virtually every corner across the continent.
Nevertheless they do join 3G-UMTS and 4G-LTE together making a wider range available to all as standard plus GSM as backup drop if LTE is out of reach (since LTE is only reliable in cities but not in the sticks) and there are a lot of uncovered sticks around... well yeah when it comes to 5G it sounds cool on glossy paper ;-) that seams to be more of a sales PR for tech-freaks to get them to buy new mobile devices for xmas and show off with it, but wouldn't be able to make any realistic use of that hyped 5G for years to come... well yeah some limited PR and marketing 5G-showoff area's would be setup on some limited highly famous larger city hotspot areas like around the Berlin Brandenburg gate right next to the government buildings and London Buckingham palace or may on top of the Eifeltower in Paris... but the rest of the continent remains dark on 5G for years to come.. so no worry about that any BlackBerry OS10 device would be without mobile network for any time soon ;-)
So for now, even if LTE is available for data use, still the connection will drop back to GSM as soon someone starting a normal phone call because it's cheaper and less data hungry for that matter, if it comes to VoIP obviously someone would need LTE or Wifi available, LTE would eat away your monthly data volume in no time but it works by using VoIP services like SIP.FM for instant and does it quite reliable but really makes only sense if the device is on WiFi-hotspot.
May the situations are changing over the next 10 years or so, talking from experience... never run after the latest hype... ;-P

In the USA, we have three backbone mobile networks. All three are shutting down all pre-4GLTE between 2021/2022 which is part of my earlier answer.
The other part of my answer is that BlackBerry Limited is shutting down everything BBOS and BB10 related on their side on January 4, 2022 per the link below. While separate, it coordinates with the USA carriers 3G shutdowns. TMO and VZW shutdown in 2021, followed by AT&T shutdown in 2022 per their respective websites.
Knowing BBOS and BB10 hardware won’t be VoLTE supported, per the carrier hardware support lists, means that BlackBerry Limited could finally shutdown the final BBOS and BB10 remnants. Unfortunately, their end does affect some aspects of BBOS and BB10 hardware operations.

I too live in the EU and some of your points are quite interesting:
- in Germany you don't have reliable 4G LTE in rural areas? I live in one of the smaller EU countries and to my knowledge most rural areas have good coverage with the carrier I am on (the local Vodafone)
- using VoLTE, if I know it correctly does not detract from your data allowance. Moreover, even if you use VoIP, it requires very little amount of data for voice calls, so it is not going to use the data allowance in no time unless it is some unpractical little amount like 200 Mbytes
- According to the resources I read on the phase out of 2G/3G in Europe it will happen (much) later than in the US for two reasons: non phone devices (like tracking devices for vehicles and so on) which work in these frequencies, and the fact that the US does not have enough spectrum to begin with to keep up simultaneously 2G/3G, 4G/LTE, and 5G
I don't think any European carrier will care about BBOS and BB10 devices to be able to function.
Moreover, in Switzerland there are carriers which already did shut down 2G services (AFAIK)
I suspect EU carriers will do whatever keeps maximum profits going. Network infrastructure upgrade and replacement costs are forever weighed against what can be charged for the newer protocols and where profit maximization sits on economic supply/demand curve.
Yep that's how it goes if the big companies getting bigger and specialised like network carriers and or Internet giants...
As they put it:
