I'm not sure but... probably you have to go on settings /notification and you have to uncheck "new message popup"

On my Passport or Z10 I didn't have to set up anything. I receive notifications without having it open. Even the pop up message works. When I have a message I get a pop-up message in the center of the screen.

Yes. Like most apps, the Android Runtime itself handles notifications. The app doesn't need to be running.

Thanks for the feedback. Took a while for me to notice that it works fine. The difference is when the active frame is running I receive the viber messages faster. When I close the app, it took around 10 minutes until the message went through.

In order for android apps to publish these sorts of popups, I'm fairly certain they DO have to be running??

Nope. Android apps DO NOT run in the background on BB10. It is a technical impossibility. I get notifications from all sorts of Android apps installed on my device without them running.

It doesn't matter if they're open or closed.
