    Dear All,

I remember there were a few threads complaining about the camera focusing speed on the Passport.

As a general rule, nothing ever comes for free, and if you want accuracy with the type of focus used in a phone, then there will be a delay as the unit goes through the focus range to find the sharpest point. The size of the sensor and/or the resolution of the of the sensor will have an impact too (one of the reasons why the passport is slower than previous models because there has been a major increase in resolution).

However, one way to get around this (if you're doing a series of shots) is to preset the exposure and focus.

You do this by focusing and exposing the image in the normal way (yes it will be a little slow). One focus has been attained (box goes green) press and hold the green box until it 'breathes' a couple of times and then locks (it will show a padlock). Now you can take pictures in quick succession without any further delays.

Obviously not good for very close ups (the nearer the image, the more critical the focus), or for shots of dogs running around. However, for general groups shots etc and anything moving within a reasonably fixed focal distance (kids sitting at a table, bikes passing a certain point) it works very well.

    Give it a go!

+1 on this tip. I've been using it lately and it's a good workaround. However, the camera still needs work though IMO.

Good tip, but as others have noted, there are still issues with the camera. I took my Passport back to Telus because the autofocus was ridiculous -- it had a bad case of the jitters and wouldn't focus on anything. Blackberry sent me a new phone and this one is much better!
