Does anyone know how this feature is utilized by the passport or what apps use this sensor.

Or is it a component of the optical image stabilization possibly?

The camera is on the front and in a way it's used as a more accurate proximity 'sensor'
Normally you have two stages for proximity sensors used in mobile phones.
1= no (infrared reflection /) face detected = have screen on.
2= (infrared reflection /) face detected = turn screen off

With a tof sensor, or any depth sensor you have far more stages of proximity. This is used in the BB Passport to measure the distance to your ear and adjust the call volume and audio characteristics accordingly (as well as a built in mic in the ear speaker measuring how many sound pressure is reflected back), to provide the best sound, or rather, call quality.

Does anybody know the range (just a decimetre or two?), and ambient light sensitivity (EDIT: ...and if those two are decent: also, the resolution), of the sensor used?

It would be nice if one could use the phone to take measurements, in a pinch.
