My carrier hasn't released the update yet and I am impatient. Can someone please explain in detail the Pros & Cons of a unlocked phone?

I'm not sure you can get updates quicker even if you unlocked your phone. If your phone was carrier issued, the updates are still carrier dependant I believe.

All phones from blackberry come unlocked and get updates pushed quicker than carrier bought phones.

Only advantage I have seen with unlocked phones is you can switch carriers, switch sims from most other networks worldwide and easier to sell.

All unlocking does is allow you to move to a different carrier. That's why it's called Carrier Locked. You can still manually (Sachesi) update a locked device. Carriers may give you grief if you ever need tech support as it is not their certified software upgrade, but there won't be any consequences.

I never understood why everyone is always in a tizzy to upgrade something that is working fine. I can see if there is an enhancement but most software patches are just maintenance and code cleaning.

To clarify, buying a unlocked phone is no different than unlocking your phone? Debrick? Root?

Unlocking ONLY unlocks it from the carrier. Nothing else.

    Mkelley65 is correct

I can confirm that Unlocking the Priv only allows you to use the phone with any other compatible network. Once unlocked it allows you to simply insert a simcard from another network and it will work right away. That is the main benefit of unlocking.

Buying a priv unlocked directly from Blackberry will send you updates the fastest.

Also some customers in Canada have stated that when they for example have a rogers priv and unlock it and then insert a simcard from Bell then when bell pushes an update they get it directly from Bell etc.

But again to clarify the main reason to unlock is to use it with another network
