Actually they were. But it is difficult to guage how an application looks on a device from the simulator alone.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if I can offer my 3 cents: why are people buying the device if they're not sold on it??? I played with the passport for a solid 2 hours before buying mine. I made sure it's what I wanted before jumping on board. The OP and the people who agree with him are experiencing buyers' remorse because they failed to take the time to go hands on with the device long enough to MAKE SURE they were getting what they wanted!! There was no obligation to buy this device, folks.

Interesting. I disliked the Z10 and Q10 when first mentioned. Played around with the Z for 3 minutes, and bought it. Ordered another one 30 minutes later. So mind was just the opposite, but, I do see your point. IMO. The Passport may not live up to everyone's expectations. Most devices never do and never will for some consumers. I'm definitely looking at it.

I love my Passport! I am responding to your post directly from my Passport via the browser! No app and no PC. I have been using this beast more and more and am truly impressed with it's performance and features!
When I first saw the Passport I thought it was fugly! The more I looked at it the more I didn't mind it's looks, but once I used it I fell in love! This is a game changer!
Thing is the android app compatibility will slowly become more and more useless as time goes on, mostly because most developers are not really porting their applications.
-Google login services.
-Google play games integration.
More and more games and apps integrate stuff like this which simply doesn't work, you can't even restore your account/game data. Yeah you can kind of patch them (for now) and it works on some applications to run them. But in general, restoring app data from a google account isn't going to happen.
I don't see developers even bothering to port their android apps/games with the google services removed on BB appworld... If they do they would need to implement another mechanism to synchronize data. I just don't see most doing that. So yeah an android runtime would work as a workaround for app availability, but the way things are moving forward I don't think it's going to last.
The Passport is a great calendar and email machine. It will be even better if/when my company finally upgrades to BES10 or 12.
But the Android runtime isn't very useful, and it's usefulness will decline over time. Some folks here understandably rush to defend the brand against all perceived "attacks". I get that siege mentality. But apps don't work "perfectly fine" on the Passport. They sort of, kind of, work if you're a huge BlackBerry fan and are willing to sacrifice significant features like push notifications, account integration, and so on.
So will Passport ever be my primary phone? Maybe. If they sell millions of these things and apps that I use get ported over (for real).
Even if that never happens, though, it's still a great device for getting emails done. In my line of work, that's a big deal, and so it becomes completely worthwhile to tuck this Passport in my bag when I leave in the morning. If they make a Passport 2 next year, I'll probably upgrade to that as well.
I'll leave my apps on my iPhone and iPad where they work without excuses or workarounds and with full support from their developers.
If you really want to make constructive suggestions or want your opinion to be heard by BlackBerry, I suggest you create an account on blackberry.icanmakeitbetter.com and engage with the community there.
As a few posters before me have mentioned, while the Passport (amongst other BlackBerry products and services) are not perfect, BlackBerry is listening and implementing our feedback in future phones and OS updates. Put your mind to good use and start suggesting away. Who knows, if you get enough up-votes, your idea might be featured in the next OS update or physical build!
I've got my pitchfork right here, and my torch is lit and everything... but.... meh. I like my Passport. Oooh, look, there's a new cat video on the internet!
How about you harness that energy and direct it at Apple! Now, there are some REAL problems to be solved.
iTunes is unstable: trying to copy songs to my iPhone 6, the songs just... stopped copying. I had to start task manager to kill iTunes. Then I relaunch it and it is just hung up, I can't reboot my machine because I'm backing up a friend's hard drive so that has to continue to completion. Oh, and when I buy songs from iTunes, sometimes they don't download completely for no good reason. None at all. I mean, a simple checksum would do the job of letting iTunes know it's not got the whole track and it should try the download again until it gets it right, but nope, iTunes sucks so bad that they don't even do that. And this is for music I've PAID for, real money, not something I'm asking them to do for free: they've taken my money and they don't try very hard to make sure I get what I paid for! Pathetic.
Those are some real problems to solve right there. The Passport is a 1.0 and it will get better with every OS update. Apple's had 8 years or more of iTunes to get these problems solved and they have 200 BILLION DOLLARS to do it. What the bleep is THEIR excuse!?
You won't be disappointed. My preference will be for a BB10 portrait slider: Z30 size screen at 1080p with trackpad... but with the Passport, I'm finding that I don't miss the larger screen, because the pixel density on the Passport is so good I just hold the device a little closer and don't feel like I'm missing anything re: screen size. I'm still getting used to the touch-sensitive keyboard (sometimes the "cursor" shows up when it's not wanted, repositions the insertion point and I have to clean up after it) but I'm sure with practice and software tweaks this will improve also... but mostly I'm remembering what I miss about my Torch: the physical keyboard. I have a Q5 that I use for development and when I tap around on its keyboard, yeah, I get why BlackBerry keyboards are loved by so many... but now, on the Passport, I ALMOST have the best of both worlds. My portrait slider with trackpad / send / end buttons would be THE best, but the Passport is pretty good (but so is the Z30). Actually, I think the Z10 and Q5 are pretty darn good too, but I guess I'm ranking them at Passport, Z30, Z10, Q5 (the Z30 is a close second to the Passport). After using the Passport for a while, just for fun I might switch BACK to the Z30 just to see if it can win me back.
[EDIT after reviewing the "icanmakeitbetter.com" site, I see that some recent postings have been marked as "acknowledged", which I hadn't noticed when I visited the site last week. The unedited "critique" of icanmakeitbetter.com follows:]
There is little or no oversight there: furthermore, it's become a "wild west" of people posting chocolate chip cookie recipes under the BlackBerry "I can make it better" site, because neither BlackBerry nor the management of the SaaS "I can make it better" are bothering even to make it DECENT. Suggestions made months and months ago are in the "created" status i.e. haven't been reviewed or anything. You want a suggestion to fall on deaf ears, that's the place to do it. It's terribly disappointing. I acknowledge that it's a lot of effort to engage on a site like that, but nobody comes out looking good when it's allowed to decay like that.
Also, there needs to be clearer posting guidelines: people post 75 different ideas in "omnibus" suggestions, and that's really not how a site like that works optimally: granular ideas (even if 'high level' or 'blue sky') so they can be vetted individually and voted on, but... it is what it is, which, at this moment, is "abandoned", apparently.
why not start your own company and sell phones. Then you can have every thing you want in a phone.
Erm......what???:raised-eyebrow::huh:
I agree that the Android runtime is likely to decline in usefulness, as more and more Android apps depend on Google Services. But some really do run "just fine" right now. I have zero problems with Kindle and Audible, for example. These are key apps for me; if they stop working, I leave BlackBerry.
I do get notifications for some Android apps, but as I understand it, only the apps using their older services can do that. Fortunately, I've reached a point where fewer notifications is better. I don't need my phone hounding me for attention all the time. But I do get that a lot of people feel differently.
It comes down to the same point that has been made many times. If BlackBerry manages to get some serious growth happening in the BB10 user base, developers will have reason to start writing native apps. If the Android runtime can help them to do that, it will have served its purpose. Without it, there's no way forward.
Web apps are the future. Why use the cut down version. Eventually the phone could just use apps straight for the web. Instagram looks better as a web app on my Passport then my son's GS4
Posted with my awesome Blackberry Passport :)
I agree that Web Apps are the future, sadly it is taking far too long for the world to realize this and more companies are continuing down the native app road when a Web App would be more practical for them. Last I looked, Instagram does not have a Web App, you cannot use Instagram Web App to take a picture and post it, that can only be done with their App which is just silly.
OP, what is it exactly that you want better? My PP does everything I need it to do better than my iPhone, Android and WP8. No complaints from me so far, if I did, I'd create a separate thread for it. I do understand a bit about the apps, but they do not affect me as I do have all the apps I need and want, if not, we do have the full browser experience as well that a lot of people forget about.
Not exactly the best way to put your foot in the door when trying to voice something. You are baiting people with posts of this nature, and by telling those people that you don't care about their opinions begs the question of why you would post it in the first place.
I get that there are some aspects of the device that aren't what you would want - but at the same time, it wasn't designed for you. It was designed for Enterprise, and on the whole, I think BlackBerry has done a FANTASTIC job with this device for those who are using it for Enterprise purposes. If it also works for you as a consumer, then great! If it doesn't.....well consumers aren't really BlackBerry's focus right now. With the restructuring that BlackBerry has done over the last few years, it doesn't matter whether the Passport is a success in the consumer market.
P.S. Not that post count *really* matters all that much, and not that I have a whole hell of a lot of posts to fall back on, but you should be mindful of your audience. With only 23 posts, you're still pretty green (heck, even I'M still pretty green with under 900). Just a helpful suggestion from one forum user to another, get yourself some experience before poking the bear.

LOL, okay, you have moved into the realm of ridiculousness. No need to read any further in this thread.
I find it so funny that people are saying that Web apps are the future (maybe just here).
As a former RIM employee, I can remember Lazaridis coming out and saying that in 2009 or 10 at an employee all hands. It was later picked up by the press and he was ridiculed (ok, he was still recovering from asking what user would ever want a colour screen on a mobile...but still)
He was the brains behind what has made BlackBerry such an icon, tarnished as it may currently be. Maybe we should dig out a few more of his gems that were too early for their own good...
I, for one, do not install apps unless I need to, and this is not something I do because of limited availability on BB10. I do the same on all the devices I've had (every galaxy since the S3, every iPhone since the 3G, and the note 2 and 3).
I look at friends and colleges phone screens and the dozens of folders and the hunting and pecking through screen after screen of apps and go f'ing bananas!!! How is the enjoyable.
I have 5 or 6 apps tops (including things that should be core os like BB Travel) and the rest is all Web based.
To each their own, I agree, but try and simplify and see if your UX doesn't go up. After you download an app, did you ever monitor how often you actually used it?

Me too!
You use your phone like I do, I keep the app installs to a minimum and rely on the web. This is to a great degree what I refer to as web app usage. Yellow Pages is a good example, their mobile site is a web app that provides geo aware locations that link to maps for navigation phone, email etc. Yet when you visit their mobile site they try to get you to install their native app which has the exact functionality. Surely developing the apps for all the platforms is a far greater hassle than just having a good web app.
This is off topic though. Not that the original topic is much to preserve.
