How did you try the magnet thing? I was thinking there are speakers underneath the chin. Just my thought, want to know in detailed since noone can really clarify.

Here's a test: take the SIM door off to simulate the chin (they're similar thicknesses), stick a piece of metal behind it, then hold a magnet to the front. OMG, IT STICKS!!!!! THE SIM DOOR MUST BE METAL.

There's electronic components within your Passport. I know that may sound insane but there are, and magnets are attracted to them, through the chin.

Plastic chin...case closed.

Even the slightest electric energy from your fingers activates this. Scroll from the bottom and slide over the space bar, no scroll, move slightly past button and it scrolls because you are near a fret. I just can't fathom a magical trackpad in each of the keys sensing your finger, It's a fret, sensing where your finger is and corresponding to it.

It's not the frets that are capacitive it's the keys. Try this, rotate the passport in landscape mode. Then go to any browser. Scroll by moving your fingers from Z to M without touching the frets. It will scroll.

If you have 10.3.2 installed you don't have to rotate your Passport. Go to Home screen and scroll left to right using Z to M keys without touching the fret and it will scroll.

This is correct. I am not sure why scrolling up only starts when you get to a fret, but rotated, I can scroll using the bottom of the spacebar, which indicates that the keys are capacatve too

Update: actually, I don't think the frets are capacatve at all. I suspect what the device is doing is that it is triggering the scroll based on moving a direction, and encountering a 2nd key. They probably do this to avoid accidental scrolling when trying to press a key. So, it has to a) have movement and b) touch a 2nd key. (test by going to landscape, scrolling from 'z' to 'x'

It's not 'when you get to a fret', it is when it detects a touch trigger sequence at two or more neighboring keys (or in the case of the space bar which has two trigger points, two touch points).

Because it's not one piece, you can see the line where it sits on top. It is melded to the stainless frame.
Metal probably of some sort.

I found this image, and I tried a magnet on my actual SE!!!!!, it is not metal. It looks like a plastic plate.

Finally a real photo.

The entire keyboard plate is plastic, just like the SIM door, the photo they should have used is below, that's all the metal there is. Looks like there is a brace under the join of the LCD and keypad.

Seems like it is. I have to brush all the silver paint on the Z30 away to eternally eliminate the scratches. Took me 8 hours though but it was worth it. Now my Z30 is all solid black

Yeah. I wouldn't do that to mine if the chin is still intact. But I am as well glad that I did it without damaging my phone. I took a leap of faith the moment I started brushing.

All I know is that a magnet will stick to 330 stainless steel. It used to confuse the guys at the scrap yard when they thought I had a ton of cast iron and then seen the pay out! $1.00 a pound years ago). I think it's the more common 400 series of stainless steel products that most people have tried sticking a magnet to and assume that magnets won't stick to stainless.
