Plastic or metal?

By what I have read so far, I think it's plastic which I would of thought it would have been Stainless Steel, but nothing surprises me, it's all about keeping the cost down and the profit up. They do the same thing in the automotive industry.

In this case it's about proper weight too. It was added for better balance when typing.

I posted this previously, but the design article on the blackberry blogs clearly states the frets are metal and since the chin and frets are all one piece that would mean the chin is metal as well. I just unpacked mine and checked it with a small magnet. The magnet sticks to both the frets and the chin.

They don't work on plastic either which was the question. Whatever metal compound they've used attracts a magnet for both the frame and the chin.

Was curious about this so did a quick search. Found this:

There are several different types of stainless steels. The two main types are austenitic and ferritic, each of which exhibits a different atomic arrangement. Due to this difference, ferritic stainless steels are generally magnetic while austenitic stainless steels usually are not.

I have no idea what the difference is between the two but thought I would share it...

Haha who knows, I'm no metallurgist , but I knew I couldn't stick my kid's art work to my fridge. I was thinking maybe the magnet would be attracted to some metal beneath the skin on both fronts. Who knows, maybe it is all metal

Magnet was a great idea.. the frame around the outside and the panel at the top of the screen is metal. The fret panel and bottom speaker panel are not, just like the Sim door.

I got mine in the mail today. Ill turn it off, stick it in the freezer and see if the chin cools as fast as the other parts... that'll tell me if its metal or not!

I tried another magnet which is about 1/4" ball, it rolls to the edges and stops, so I think it's going towards the edge stainless instead of the keyboard plate.

The best test would be to heat up the tip of a needle or pin and see if it creates a melt hole or pock mark in the chin. Anybody want to volunteer for this test? Haha.

I'll let someone else give that a try. I still think it's metal since that is what Blackberry indicates on their blog, but either way I'm really liking the device.

There's no need to test it in these way's. The fret/chin plate is plainly plastic. Tap it with a coin and you'll see. Or just look at it, it's not steel. Or touch it. Magnet could be attracted to anything down there, like the speakers or USB port.

It is plastic.

The frets have to be metal, this is where they get the "track" effect from. The chin is also metal, as the design blog states.

It's only a big deal because the BlackBerry blog made it seem as though the chin/frets would be steel. And also because, it really should be. Fake metal is cheesy.

In practice and in the hand, it's completely unnoticeable during normal use and not a big deal at all. Still a beautiful phone.

Steel would have been nicer. And it would have certainly aged better. But I'm sure there was an engineering reason for the plastic chin. Probably better reception.
