Built for Business - Learn more about BlackBerry KEY2

    Hello All,

As an avid BlackBerry user, I've been a sporadic follower of this forum for many years and more recently a regular visitor owing to the uncertainty over the future of BB phones.

To name a few, I've had a Curve, Bold, Classic, Torch, Q10, Priv, and PP which was reluctantly 'replaced' by a KeyOne.

The K1 is now very slow and I have been wondering where I go from here, with the Key2 not in the mix, necessarily.

I still pine over my PP yet have been seriously considering the FX Pro (1) as my 'must haves' are, you've guessed it, a PKB and the Hub, which I'm guessing I can get on Android. However, I can't bring myself to make the psychological leap from BlackBerry for many of the reasons often listed here.

And now I have another dilemma! I saw a person happily using a BlackBerry PP this week. I'm no techy and had assumed these were pretty much defunct not least as I have problems accessing websites - security messages are frequently received restricting access, which of course is a pain. So my question is: How do I bring my PP out of retirement?

I've found the thread giving instructions on how to side-load the Playstore and will give this a go but are there any other tips to get my PP running again?

Thanks for any help received or direction given.

What do you use your smartphone for? The passport does still work but is also handicapped is some areas as well. Some android apps/games run and other will not. These can make up for the gap that BB has. Also BB World no longer has paid and will shut down in some way at the end of the year as BB10 will go End of Life at that time.

Thank you for replying. My PP is used mainly for writing emails, using Excel and Word, surfing the Internet, banking etc and is what I've just posted using. I use WA (a work around loaded last year or the year before), which is now refusing to work on my PP - keeps telling me the date is wrong - and Telegram, generally. I seldom use my phone for media/film etc other than news channels.

I currently have Amazon to access apps. I've also tried to side-load Playstore as per the instructions from another thread but am unclear where to D/L this from?

    Look for people like @conite @TrumpetTiger @brookie229 @mh1983

and many others to provide various perspectives from different angles

The WhatsApp issue should be resolved by uninstalling everything WhatsApp related from all the old solutions and download latest apk directly from WhatsApp official site.
@conite suggests Yalp and others have varying opinions for various reasons

Thank you for the WA guidance. I will give it a shot @chuckfinley69 and continue to read posts from other users but before I do, I may have to put on my tin-hat, it appears, as an outsider. Hope that's not too controversial...

Excellent, @conite. I will explore this a bit further.

Thank you to you all for taking the time to lend a helping hand.

Any thoughts on the F(x)tec Pro 1? Would I be able to add the Hub to it? I'm very tempted but as it will be the first ever, I'm tempted to wait for a newer version. The down-side is that, in reality, it could be the first and last! I also need to have physical sight of the FX Pro (1) before jumping in. I must say, the forum is very interesting...

You’ll be fine and only @TrumpetTiger requires tin-hat and then only to formal non-virtual events. What happens in Gotham stays in Gotham or so TT says...

Your efforts IMO would be better spent in refreshing your K1 to restore it's original speed than in resurrecting a BB10 device which would seem slow after using a K1.

Plus, if you do try a FX Pro 1 it would be much easier to migrate to it from another Android phone than it would be from a BB10 device.

    Just to share personal experience.

As much as I love my Passport SE I find difficult to recommend it as the "daily driver" - unless one carries two phones, as I do.
I use Passport extensively for emails, Telegram, Evernote. Very often for: ebooks reading(Kindle), browsing (still prefer Reader mode in BB10), simple Word/Excel work. Occasionally: photo, music.
I'm really going to use this phone until it dies. Just ordered new battery and new flip case.
But I keep Android device for all other needs and some of them are vital and can not be done on BB10 anymore. This device is replaced more often then any of Blackberries I owned. Droids, useful and faceless and expendables...
To summarise: if for whatever reason I have to leave just one smartphone, it would not be the Passport.
    (I wish it would).

    Hey dmlis,

I completely understand your perspective. If I may ask, what is it you cannot do on BB10 that you need to do?

Most important: banking apps, Wechat (many Chinese contacts), Garmin Connect, Coursera (online learning), Atmotube (air quality sensor, essential for me because of asthma) and several specialised apps related to work.
Less important: cloud connections as Box and OneDrive(existing workarounds are not convenient), Google Books, some apps related to local services as medical, postage, shopping.

Alas, unless you're comfortable accessing most of that information from web sites, if they are even accessible would be a huge ask and challenge. As much as I admire and love my Passport, I believe your needs might far exceed present capabilities of a BB10 devise.

    You are right, of course.
But for me it's a small inconvenience, since I carry two devices anyway. It might be more problematic for the topic starter who (as I understood) wanted to keep one phone only.
